As most folk on the Forum just seem to want a 'fruitier' exhaust note and most of us probably agree that it's frisky enough on the power/performance front.......rather than spend between 500 and 700 odd quid to liberate a few more baratone decibels and the odd hp or two as an added extra.........has anybody considered/tried/successfully tweaked their standard silencers to liberate a few more 'baratone decibels'?

Having just poked a piece of wooden dowel, (it was a calibrated piece dowel of course!) into the outlet end of the silencer, it went in 9.5 inches, (240mm to the younger crew on here), before coming up against some form of baffle. Simply drilling a hole through this baffle would probably liberate the decibels we all crave for not a lot of £'s, just a smidge of elbow grease. I did this to Yamaha 1600 Wild Star cruiser many years ago and it worked a treat.....sounded better than a Hardly Ableson!

It was also a known mod on B*W GS's of various capacities to open up the silencers, de-gut them and weld them back up. But actually on the GS you could run them with no silencer box on them at all, just a small increase of a fruitier noise since the 'cat' did 99% of the sound deadening.....there was a member on there who had some smart looking little tail pipes in stainless made up you could just attach to the 'cat' outlet, looked really smart like that and I never ever got pulled.

Does anybody know/seen what the internal arrangements of baffles are inside one of the standard silencers?.....perhaps there is a similar opportunity here.

.......anybody throwing away/getting rid of a pair of Thruxton 12 chrome silencers really (like, free to a good home) cheap?.......

    Cheers,

I drilled the back of my v-rod cans with pleasing results but I cannae see a respectable way of drilling these . I removed my w800 baffles with a hole saw but they werent that far in . I guess a member wots bought posh cans would gladly sacrifice their meagre cans for the greater good.

    Hi Tricolore,

Sorry, I did see those as well but no good for me, they are off of the 'tarts handbag' Thruxton, the R, brushed ally and all that,...... blimey, they've even put the front forks on the wrong way up on that one, what ever next?........remote reservior rear shocks?.......you having a laugh?........

...........no, I need the polished chrome ones for the old boys 'authentic' Thruxton 12, hours of fun with Solvol Autosolve......

    Cheers,

I don't think chrome polishes does it ? you could try your anusol on it for starters.
I had to have a tanker of autosol for my vrods solid ally wheels .

Removable baffles on the US Vance & Hines don't make much difference, guys have actually removed both end cans and still the bike is quite! The Cat is acting like a large baffle.....

Here are a couple of pics of Thruxton R cans that have had the outer restriction removed using a hole-saw, not mine, stole them of that other Triumph Rat forum before the banned me for life for being me :)

Last pic was a 50mm hole-saw (I think) and the second was a 60mm (again, I think)....The first pic shows the inner restriction..

Well, I called some guy an idiot...which he was, and probably still is. He complained to some moderator called Bonnieblack who banned me for around 4 days and the only way I could post anything was if it had been read and passed by him. So when I pointed out to someone else that what he had posted was wrong and included links to prove it he said I had a bad attitude (which I have :)) but he also complained and that tosser of a moderator threatened me with a life ban, so I told him to go fu*k himself, simple really....No malice from me, I just say it as I see it.....

Anyway, the thing with these bikes is the catalytic converter, its very restrictive and you don't really get much more out of them until you remove it along with opening up the exhaust. There are about four companies that do X pipe type replacements for the cat ranging from about $100 to $350, but IMO they are a wast of time unless you are just looking for a cheap fix to get more sound, if you are looking from a performance point of view you would be far better waiting and getting some straight through header pipes so you have an uninterrupted flow. There are some header pipes being made in the UK just now but I cant tell you much about them as of yet because I am waiting for more details. Also Arrow are making some headers you can find them on their website here http://www.arrow.it/en/assembled/1494 but less expensive alternatives will be available soon I'm sure..
I've heard a Thruxton R run with the V&H (off road) silencers which are around £600 and it doesn't sound much different from the stock bike...because of the cat restriction. Simple way to see how restrictive the cat is would be to remove the silencers and run the bike round the block, it wont do any harm...

Downside of straight through headers and open exhaust would be that it probably would need remapping and right now the only way that can be done is with a Power Commander so this turns expensive very quickly....

The cheapest way to go is the X pipe cat replacement and cut the hole into the rear of the stock silencers, that should make quite a noticeable difference...video here of Free Spirits cat delete (X pipe) with some slip on mufflers https://www.instagram.com/p/BPOn4dSDyeS/

    Manufacturers of X-pipes are..
    Free Spirits (Italy)
    Moto Trio (Thailand)
    Meerkat (Australia)
