All set this morning for an early ride, dressed and ready to go, turn on the ignition and 'CLICK' - not a sausage...........bloody Triumph !

2 hours on the charger and away she goes.

Why ? I hear you ask, because I left the starter button in the RUN position rather than OFF, it drained the battery flat in 6 days, my last run was last Sunday and 120 miles.

Page 45 in the manual, don't leave start switch in the RUN position. Not used to all this modern stuff, that's my excuse

Yeah the kill switch, I'm used to turning the engine off with the key. Live and learn I guess or read the handbook...

It's worse than that, now the flippin engine management light is stuck on

Hi DD - the battery has been on charge with the optimate, now fully charged.

Can I not just disconnect the terminals overnight rather than taking the battery out ?

Thanks guys, I've got a few mad days at work now so will leave it and try one or all three of your suggestions next week...

I read somewhere just turning the ignition on and off 5 times clears it but it didn't work...

I think you may have read that wrong.

The ignition switch is what you put the key in. (Page 60, no. 5)

The manual merely tells owners not to leave the key turned to the on position for long periods without starting the engine.

The start button can be left in the central 'run' position without draining the battery.

Turning the start/stop switch to the off position is for 'emergency use only' to quickly kill a running engine.

It says in the note (p45) that it doesn't turn off all electrical circuits & can discharge the battery (if the key is left on & only the kill switch is in the off position)

Perhaps there's something else wrong or you accidentally left the parking lights on by turning the key to the far left when you last locked the steering? Easy to do & that would definitely flatten your battery....

hhhhmmmm ! I definitely didn't leave the parking lights on. I know I left the start/stop switch in the run position for the last 3 weeks and thought that could be the only cause..

If it's not that then I'm at a loss why a 3 week old bike with 300 miles on has a flat battery. At the beginning I was starting it a lot when fitting the tail tidy, removing baffles etc but after a good long run last Sunday would have thought the battery was back up to full charge..

I've disconnected the battery and will put back late tonight, hope that clears the EML ..

Starting/stopping it a lot will flatten the battery. The heaviest drain on the battery comes from starting it.
So if you were just starting it then turning it off without going for a run to put some charge back then you could flatten the battery that way.

Disconnecting the battery overnight didn't work...

I think I'll just keep riding it and hope it goes out, in the meantime try and get it booked in for its first service next week.

I fitted the optimate leads when the battery was first flat, wonder whether that has anything to do with it ?

Fitting the leads then shouldn't matter. Have you started her from cold let her warm up and repeat twice more?

I'm going to try that now, does it need to just warm up or get really hot and the fan kick in ?

bring hr up to full running temp, so take her out for a 10 min ride, then you have to let her cool down fully. and repeat.
if you have done this over the last few days normally it should have done it, but if unsure do it again

when fitting the tail tidy you haven't left a bare cable touching something which is draining the battery?

The tail tidy was fitted by the dealer, I have shortened it but no snipping of any wires.

I have started it a few times this morning but think I'm better to leave it now until the weekend and as you say, go out for a run 3 times....

Thanks for your help, being a brand new bike things like this are just really irritating...

Yeah the battery was fully charged after about an hour (max ) on the optimate, I left it on for a few more hours and I've started it 4 - 5 times since and its perfect. As I say i did 120 miles last Sunday and it was dead by the following Sunday, didn't touch it in between, and the ignition and key were off. Doing that mileage you think it would have recharged the battery so something has caused it to drain in 7 days. Only thing was the kill switch was on RUN but we've eliminated that to be the cause, weird..

As long as riding it with the light on doesn't cause any damage I'll do a few more miles hoping it goes out and take it for its first service next week........if i can get it booked in anywhere that is ??

I had similar(ish) symptoms on my bike recently, the battery wasn't chargeing even though I was riding it.
I replaced the rectifier, didn't sort it. I replaced the stator and it is perfect now.
If you can, use a multimeter and see what voltage is going accross the battery with ignition completely off, should be 12.6v ish. Then with the ignition and lights on, the volts should slowely drop, turn on the engine and the voltage should read 14+v or more if the lights are off.

If the volts remain around 12v or lower with the engine running, then the startor needs replacing...£250+ from Triumph or £115 from Squaredeals-ltd.co.uk...or nought if under warranty

    No alarm....

It's booked into Triumph Birmingham next Thursday, give me time to get it up to the 500 or so miles, you never know the EML light might have gone out by then. I'll leave it off the optimate as well and see what happens to the battery over the next week.

    Watch this space.....
