Absolutely, I may be going over to visit the WWI graves next year as I’ve never seen my grandfather’s grave.

 

That will be a great trip to make @Baza
Fortunately my Grandad made it home and lived to 86 with shrapnel in his leg. All heroes.

 

He’s buried in a civilian cemetery in Beuvry. A company assembly in the courtyard of their barracks received an 8” artillery shell. You can imagine the death and destruction that ensued.

 

Out in the garden at the moment. Will give it a good read when I get inside. Many thanks.

 

Bellow you can see an extract from the regimental diary about the incident. Note the comment at the end about how inconvenient it was for the regiment’s future capability would suffer due to the casualties suffered by the other ranks. Regarded as cannon fodder, no thoughts as to their families back home.

I have also attached the notification to my grandmother as to the death of grandfather. Just another form some jobsworth had to fill in.

Every time I read these two items I get really angry.

Mrs Baza’s grandfather did make it back home having been gassed and a large chunk of one of his hips shot away. Like your grandfather he had shrapnel next to his spine until the day he died, but he managed to get to 78.

 

That is a cold, impersonal document. Very heartless.

 

we owe so many a debt of gratitude that cant be repaid. I have relatives in Tyne Cot and Gallipoli. I will visit both before im gone.
Went to WWII graveyards in Normandy looking for relatives another sobering experience.

 

@Baza Yes chilling reading all this. But as the topic heading. We must never forget those brave people gave their todays for our tomorrows God bless them all.

A British Trench Sniper plate. Painted to commemorate the fallen of WW1.
If you look closely the trap plate was taken off by a few bullet hits. The plate was actually bent.
