Riding out in the Campsies, I came up behind a slow moving car and moved out to overtake, then he turned right into a farm lane, no mirrors, no signals, just the manoeuvre. I grabbed the brakes and tried to turn with him, but a glancing blow saw me end up on my side on the grass verge. Twisted forks, broken mirror, broken brake lever, damaged exhaust and the engine running on it's side with (presumably) oil starvation. Fortunately, I'm OK other than some aches and pains, but I've always said the first accident at my age (71), or even a close call, would see me hanging up my riding gear. So is this it? Ask me now and I'd say yes. Bugger.
I said the same thing to myself before I recently decided to stop riding due to joint pain (will be 75 next week). However you seem to have been having some great rides out and it will be a shame if you decide to call it a day because of some moron who doesn't know how to drive properly. Glad you are ok and the bike can be fixed
So sorry to hear that, got knocked off my bike in Mar in my 64th year. Only you can answer if you will get back on a bike but I'd let the shock, anger, and depression lift before making a hard decision to stop altogether.
Really sorry to hear that. As @TRIPLE X and @TonyG have said. You were clearly enjoying your bike, let things settle, heal up and think again: The bike can be repaired or replaced (although it will take a while for the emotional attachment to your bike to subside). Although it clearly wasn't your fault, put it down to a learning experience. I'm sure you've got many more happy miles in front of you.
First things first - glad you’re okay. Second don’t make any rash decisions. Get the bike fixed and go from there. Looking at (and I must say, enjoying) your posts you are an active member still getting out regularly. Have soak, a stiff drink and put today behind you.
Thanks everyone - I'll not make any rash decisions, and have been surprised at how calm my wife has been... telling her was my biggest worry!! Just going through the motions with insurance, Triumph dealer, legal advice etc. to find the best way forward.
Don't do it,i said the same thing a number of years ago ,fought the urge and jumped back in head 1st. I know the area well,my mate lived in Kippen main st.and I came from Springburn and then Milton.The campsies are lovely but that cattle grid at the top is a trap waiting to catch out the unwary,,hope you're up and running soon .
These things happen, and seeing as it's not your fault, then clearly there is no reason to doubt your riding ability. Dust yourself down, give time to recover and reset. Taking the bike as part payment, if it's written off, could be a blessing. Money in the bank to make up for the loss of WFP plus repaired with secondhand parts, could have you back on the road in no time with cash falling out of your pocket to go wherever you want and treat yourself Glad your ok, all the best.
Bent or broken metal can be repaired and/or replaced, no matter how badly damaged. Its much more important that you are ok without major injuries. If it's your first accident at 71 you've done really well, you must be a safe rider and it was some idiot who didn't look that took you out. You obviously enjoy riding, as we all do, so don't decide on impulse, take plenty of time. We have (mostly) all been there and it is hard to shake the bug, I know I couldn't when it happened to me. I just treat everyone as an idiot these days and give a wide berth. Whatever you decide, good luck.

One small piece of advice however, you may get some claims management company approach you and offer you a bike until yours is returned. Be VERY careful, this may be at extortionate rates and if you sign for it you may be liable for the full charges if the 'hire' company cannot get the charge back from insurers. If you can mange without a bike until yours is repaired or replaced then do so. Get well soon!!

@ajc400 So very sorry to hear of your mishap. But just happier you are not to bad and still mobile. Yes i have been of a few times in my past. Had my skull fractured shoulders pulled out of joint broken collar bone fractured spine were i spent over a year ion a settee bed. Mind not all of these at the same time. Like you i said that's it. But i have tried to explain to loved ones and friends and family there is something in our blood that drags us back to our passion. Not trying to sway you in any way. What i do say is don't desert us here in the forum you are to valuable to lose and you contribution is always genuine and interesting. Again my Brother sorry to hear your bad news and wish you a speedy recovery to full health.
Joe, no real injuries, just so annoyed with the driver and not thinking about him possibly turning. Samsgrandad - Bennetts do use a claims company and did offer a hire bike but I said no.... I think Joe McD has two 400's, do you think he'd let me borrow one?!
@ajc400 Yes any time mate. Long way to come but you can borrow the 400 street scrambler for as long as you need. Its just had the 600 service so good to go. Just let me know. Possibly via the personal mail service on here.
@ajc400, knowing @joe mc donald, I'll bet he wasn't joking about loaning you a bike! I'm so sorry to learn of your accident. But I'm really glad to know that you didn't wind up any worse off than you did. As for the driver......bugger is right. I hope that he at least stopped to help you. I also hope that you don't wind up with anything worse than aches and pains and that those subside quickly. As others have said, machines and metal and parts can be fixed or replaced. I agree with other forum friends who suggested taking your time deciding about your future riding. From your posts and photos, it's clear to see that you truly enjoy your bike and your rides. Finally, as a wife myself with a husband who rides, I'm glad that your wife has been so calm through this ordeal. Please keep us posted!
@ajc400 As @Sandi T said i won't joke about things like my bikes. You are a Brother and have had some Moran damage your bike. And it keeps you mobile till you really decide if you want to give up or not. The offer is made in all sincerity. You know if Sandi T and Steve ever come here they could do the same to tour around on for how ever long they wanted.
Some wonderful people on this forum! Fortunately, my daughter and grandson from New Zealand arrive at the weekend, so that'll keep me busy for a couple of weeks, and after that it's downhill to winter, and I don't ride in the winter!
@ajc400 Yes and you are one of them. We don't want to lose you be it a riding member or a regular contributor wit advice or what ever. That will be nice for you to have the family with you for a while. I love my Boys and the grandkids even more. It brought tears to my eyes last Friday when the daughter picked up my little granddaughter and she refused to go as she wanted to stay with grandad. I had to get in the car to make her believe i was going with her. But you enjoy the time you get with them. They are precious and the memories unreplaceable.
My grandson is 14, and rides his Honda CRF on their block (NZ terminology for farmyard smallholding) so I was looking forward to shoing him the new Triumph. Doh! Tried to load a smaller photo.... and got two!?!
