If you're the praying type, keep my buddy Tommy in your thoughts. Tommy is a friend/former coworker of mine. He's a couple years older than me, which puts him at about 75. He wiped out on his Harley down in Virginia over the weekend and was seriously injured. He hit a patch of sand on a curve, lost control and went down about a twenty-foot embankment, so I'm told. Lacerated liver, ruptured spleen, punctured lung, cracked vertebrae and broken ribs. I saw him at a bike event in the spring, but I haven't ridden with him in a few years. He's a hell for stout rider. Not that we were canyon carvers on our big baggers (he on his Harley and me on my Victory), but I couldn't keep up with him in the twisties. It can happen to the best of us, I guess.

A site agent I worked with a few years back came off his R1 on a slow junction corner because of loose gravel. It's too easy to get caught out with poor road maintenance these days.

Hope your pal pulls through to a full recovery.

I'm really sorry about your friend's accident and terrible injuries, @Fork Lock. And I am the praying type and will include Tommy in my prayers.

Tom is home. He'll be resting/healing for a few more weeks, but he's already online looking for a new Harley.

Apparently, the report relayed from Tom's mates about hitting loose gravel was an assumption on their part. Speaking directly to Tom he said he doesn't remember what happened. The first thing he remembers is them lifting the bike off of him. He said it was the end of a long, eight-hour, day of riding. It had been oppressively hot. They pulled off the main highway on to a back country road going downhill and there was a noticeable drop in temperature. He said getting out of the heat was a relief and very relaxing. He thinks he nodded off!!

Not a good thing to admit to. Believe it must have been gravel or poor road surface.

I'm really glad to read that your friend, Tom, is home and healing up, @Fork Lock. His report to you about his memory of the circumstances is a good reminder to find ways to stay refreshed and alert and guard against getting too tired. I nearly nodded off years ago after a big lunch in hot weather and on a stick straight road. Scared the beejeebus outta me! And taught me a very useful lesson to boot.
