Took my Jack Lilley special 1200 Thruxton in for its service today at Lind West London. Needed a few extras and ended up being about £670, new battery, etc.. 3 miles from Lind stopped gently at a roundaboiut and a bloody great transit rear ended me. Bike went up in the air and smashed down on left side. Bloke that hit me was really nice, admitted full liability, called the police as we were partially blocking the roundabout access to the M25, told the police it was his fault and ended up driving me 30 miles home. Phoned Lind and they were really helpful and came and picked up the bike, initial findings were the expected scrape damage, bent lever etc., scraped left hand fork plus written off rear wheel. So now I'm mired in the nightmare that is an insurance claim. You would think it would be cut and dried but I bet it doesn't work out that way. Tiny little ding on back of my helmet as well, but my textile jacket and trousers don't have a mark. I'm feeling a bit bruised now the adrenaline and anger has gone and I'm back home. Just serviced, all set up for spring and this happens!

    Thanks, already onto the beer.

Because the police came I got breathylised and even though I've never drunk and driven and only had a couple of beers last Sunday it was still strangely worrying, you also get cautioned even though you are not at fault.

Anyway, it's in the hands of the insurers now, no bike for months if I get it back at all and highly unlikely to recoup the costs of the extras on it. Car insurance due as well so have to tell them which will probably bump that up even though I'm not at fault.

I know I should be thankful I'm ok but I just can't see it that way.

    Cheers.

Bad luck mate. Useless bloody car drivers eh! As has been said no real damage to you, which is great. The bike can be repaired or replaced. You can’t be

Real bummer mate and like everyone says hope you are mending as in disappointment and feeling down. And you are right you never recoup the extra's you have added. Where in Bucks are you located. As i am picking up my 2010 Bonnie from Bulldogs today and if you needed a bike for a week or two it will be here as i won't use it till next month. Joe

Glad at least you're ok. Don't let your insurer provide you with a courtesy bike as that could effect whether your bike gets written off or not and shoukd you want one don't take delivery of it until the other insurer agrees to pay or you'll end up paying for it yourself. As plod attended you should be able to get a copy of the police report which would help should the other drivers insurers play the knock for knock game, plus it'll give you back up should they undervalue your bike if they want to write it off. Don't forget to claim for at least a new helmet too and any other kit that's damaged

Jeez mate that is so unlucky. These van drivers never look where they're going but as others say, you got away with little damage to yourself and that's a bonus. Had to happen after a big spend on it too, obviously you ain't likely to see that money come back.
Hope the insurance sorts it promptly for you. Good luck.

That is a really kind offer, luckily I'm fortunate enough to have another Bonnie 865 myself so can still ride, but thanks very much!

    Thanks for the replies.

The van drivers insurers contacted me yesterday(he's actually a vehicle delivery driver and was taking the van to it's new owner) and said they accept full responsibility, and as they don't deal with mcycles are happy for me to proceed with Lind Triumph West London for the repairs. I don't want a loan bike or anything like that, just want the bike back the same as it was when I rode out of Lind 5 mins before the impact. As they are paying I think they should replace like for like so I shouldn't lose out on any of the extras. That is how Lind are preparing the quote so we'll see. While first impressions are the damage is cosmetic it's so easy for costs to mount up and be declared a write off. Also, I'm a natural worrier, already worrying that impact to left side gear change will cause a later gearbox failure as reported all over the forums.

Physically, I think I'm fine and don't want the inevitable injury chasers I'll get contacted by. Just really depressed. Taken the day off work, nice little ride, big service paid, all set up for riding season and WHACK! In one instant of somebody's random carelessness you are buggered, literally in my case by a bloody great Transit. As bikers I think we invest a lot more into our pride and joys and I was just heart broken.

Plus it just complicates everything, car insurance renewed today and that has gone up because of this.

Anyway, thanks again for your responses, helps to think people care.

    Cheers

It really boils my p!ss when insurance companies use an accident which is not your fault to increase your premium. How does somebody running into the back of you increase your personal risk profile. They are just robing b@stards.

The wankers "justify" it by claiming if you've had an accident their "data" says you're more likely to have another. SWMBO had a know reverse into her in Aldi's car park, he admitted liability (with the dashcam fiming) but our insurers still put her premium up even though she has protected no claims.

Well, NCD protection if you have it which I do, works like this. They load up your premium if you have an accident and then apply the same NCD discount. You don't lose the NCD discount you have accumulated, e.g 30 or 40%, but it is applied to an increased premium. They even told me that any incident I have will be added to my home post code so will have a tiny impact on all insurance for my post code, even though I had the accident in a spot that is probably an accident hot spot, my little sleepy village sort of takes the blame. Basically, just a way to manipulate statistics so they can try and sneak up the premium for an area which is probably actually very safe with little risk.

It hurts to lose the bike because of our passion and care towards our machines. But at the end of the day the most important thing is that YOU ARE SAFE AND YOU WILL CONTINUE TO ENJOY TONS OF MILES ON A NEW BIKE.

I hope the insurance company doesn't try to shaft you just like every other insurance company . Don't give in to their stupid offers and reasons. Fight for the reasonable correct payout and ensure the records are set right "NON FAULT ACCIDENT".

    Good luck buddy

One of the reasons is because if you have an accident without NCD protection you normally go down from 65% to about 40%, then if you have another you go down even more and it then takes a long time to build it back up to 65% again. As @TonyG says they load the premium up at the front end before they apply your still intact NCD

I've had this happen to me twice, first time back in 1983 on a Z1300 rear ended at a roundabout and a Fireblade written off by a myopic farmer in 1994, both times the other party was at fault and I (my insurance) paid out nothing so my policies weren't affected. Loading a policy due to a no fault accident is BS. In the case of the Fireblade I got above market value for the bike, they gave me the bike which I sold for another £2500, £1100 for leathers and helmet and a further £1500 for a knee injury. When my first Street Scrambler was stolen and recovered/written off in 2021 off I got a good payout and got to to remove and keep all the extra bits I'd fitted but they screwed my NCB. I didn't have it protected but they said if it was, the next renewal would still have gone up but not by as much.

Surely any premium hikes on a " no fault basis" are part of your claim as it is a loss incurred due to the actions of their client.

Add it to your claim but make sure it is fully justified and correct to undergo scrutiny.

I claimed £650 for the electric bill to run the subsequent dryers and dehumidifiers after a flood in my house.
Ironically I couldn't claim for the fresh mains water bill that caused the damage

I agree it's unfair but the problem is at the time you have no way of knowing how much extra it's going to cost you when you renew, plus of course I don't think your insurer is likely to tell you how much extra it will cost you compared to if you'd not made the claim and of course it won't just be the 1st renewal where they'll charge you more.

When my first SS was stolen and written off in Nov 21 the renewal in June 22 went up although not as much as I expected TBH. The following year's renewal in June 23 came down almost £100. I don't what's happened this year but something has hit the fan 'cos insurance renewals seem to have gone up with a bang irrespective of any claims people have or haven't made on their policies. Feckin' racket.

I think I must have bucked the trend this year as my multi bike policy has come down this year :)

I can empathise with this and you today :(

So the YSS fork upgrade kit has only sat on the garage shelf for x3 months+ whilst I got around to sorting this job out.
Last week I took the forks completely to bits, new innards, springs, seals etc.
Test rode it the other day to find the oil was too viscous so syphoned it off and replaced with lighter grade.
Parked the bike outside today whilst painting the shed with the intention of a test ride once completed, let's call it inspiring motivation :yum

Half way through painting said shed, youngest comes to see me shame faced
    Whats up? says I.
I'll pay for it! says he :worried: come and have a look?

He's only put my ST away as it looked like rain and dropped it
Oh and it fell on to the TZR :sob: shagging the plastics up both front and rear.
Which then fell onto my new, only a few week old, mountain bike :sob::sob::sob:

    Oh FFS!!@@

    20240316_115730.jpg

    Snapped off front mudguard
    Offside silencer raked vertically.
    Offside fork leg deeply scratched
    Bar ends...... etc....

Forks now fully stripped back to where we were a few days ago and exhaust removed whilst we decide how best to proceed :confounded:

One perfectly good ( DISCONTINUED ) mudguard scrapped.
