765 Racetorx Triumph Gear Shift Support

    I have had a few missed gearchanges on my STRS 765, I knew it wasn't down to rider error so delved into matters, what I realised when I ran the machine up (on an Abba stand and strapped securely down to the floor), what I saw was a slight flexing of the gear shaft, so I sought a remedy, and the Racetorx gear support fitted the bill perfect, so having bought and installed it (very easy and straightforward), after some spirited runs out with plenty of up and down shifts there have been no missed gears or false neutrals. The support bracket has a needle roller bearing that fits perfect on the shaft with no flexing, the 2 bolts are removed from the TPS and the support bracket then fits onto that with 2 new bolts supplied, what needs to be done is remove the wire cable holding bracket and use a cable tie loosely around the TPS wire and the Quick Shifter/Blipper cable to avoid anything snagging, the bolts are only torqued to 8.5 nm but should be thread locked (not permanent types), the sprocket cover needs to have a small amount of material removed to clear the support, you could leave it as it is, however it will be held against the support and may well case the coating to the bracket wearing off over time.

    Fitted one of those to my 2020 RS from new.
    I've had one missed gear in @1500 track miles....:)
    I've also fitted one to my Tiger as well.

    @Iceman do you think these are really necessary and worthwhile in hindsight?

    Genuine question, as a mate has just bought a 2017 765rs and it has one (or a similar make) already fitted.
    My 765rs is a 68 plate and I have no issues but don't want to miss the boat and regret it.
    What do you think?

    Hi Eldon, I have had a number of Street Triples, I traded my Speed Triple in for for one after a test ride, also had a 675R that ran faultless, the trade in was for a new 2019 Street Triple 765 RS, again that was faultless, it only had the quickshifter and not the later model with auto blipper, the only reason I traded it in 2020 was it was a matt black and a pain to clean, however the bike ran faultless and I never had a single issue, given I was genuinely that hacked off with the matt black paintwork that I bought another new 765RS in September 2020 in sliver ice, however whilst under warranty I did have it back a couple of times for missed gearchanges, however the dealer did not manage to rectify the issue despite it occurring when they test rode it. I stripped the linkage down, re greased the pivots and adjusted the linkage rods, it was a lot slicker, then I had more issues and some false neutrals more recent, this is when I put it on the Abba Stand and ratchet tied it down to floor anchors, having ran it up I could see that the issue appeared to be the distance between actuator and shaft (slight flexing), after some research I came upon the Racetorx gear support, it was then further research revealed that a number of people experiencing the same issue. I made a decision to buy the gear support, having been on 2 spirited runs in good conditions and 1 very very wet ride I have had no problems at all to date. The Street Triple 765 range of models are excellent machines, nothings perfect of course with any make or model but most issues can be rectified, although from time to time you can get a complete rogue machine and it is probably better to part ways with it. I borrowed and fitted a new (same part and year) quickshifter/blipper and it made no difference. I can only give an honest appraisal of my experience, I will place progress reports on the forum in an honest manner as time goes on, both positive or negative whatever that may be. Ironically last year my eldest son's Panigale 1299s had a quickshifter issue and he was really fed up with it, I ride it fairly regular (only short distances now), a test ride and realised the QS/Blipper was at fault, anyway digressing slightly, I fitted a new Translogic unit, what a difference that machine has electronics that Triumph can only dream about and now the gearchanges up/down are slicker than any machine I have ridden. Would I recommend the Racetorx gear support, personally it has done the job for me up to now, I would say given your machine has something similar and it runs without issue then I would leave it as it is, as mentioned my 2019 model was perfect. I couldn't find anything other than the Racetorx, any quality made unit would be ok though a sit is only a carrier and needle roller bearing. Ride safe all from an ageing Rocker.

    I wonder if there you may have hit the nail on the head; Could it be the design and leverage calculations were adequate when only an upshifter QS but, with subsequent developments into an autoblipper downshifter as well, has this highlighted a weakness?

    Spirited riding or steady, mine has never had a poor change solo or with an adult pillion. The only time I've cringed on a gearchange was when my youngest was on the back and he used to sit up tight, like both trying to get on the front seat. My body position was different and so was the angle of my foot. Add to this a weak effort on the gearlever and hey presto poor change.

    In all other scenarios my gearbox and QS have performed faultlessly so, like you suggest, I think I'll leave as is for the moment but look forward to your updates on your experiences.

    @Iceman, why didn't you just spray your matt black paintwork instead of chopping the bike in? Presumably it would have been a far cheaper exercise, and the V5 will only have said "black", anyway.

    I did look into it, a good friend and respected sprayer said he could do the work, even at mates rates it was expensive, however I only paid £1000 to swop, and the 2020 model had the up down shifter and other mods compared to the 2019 model, (I did test ride it first (a demo anyway), and realised it had more acceleration and mid range than the older one I had, also I was able to change over all the extras from mine apart from the heated grips and screen, as that is different on the 2020 model. I have put a lot of time and money into the current one with all manner of mods and upgrades, you could go on forever I guess. I still am considering a Ducati Monster SP as I really like them, and a test ride only cemented that more, at the cost I can't justify having 2 machines though, especially as I am getting into a project chopper. Ride safe all from an ageing Rocker.

    Plus @learningtofly I think you will find little details like the transfers are silly prices and add significantly to the overall cost, plus then need lacquering over for longevity also adding further costs.

    The last time I bought a factory sticker kit for one of my off road bikes the costs were exhorbitant when you consider you are just buying bits of coloured sticky backed plastic. To add insult to injury, they only did one kit, no part kits and no separate engine size kits, so you ended up with 80/125/200/250/300 stickers when all I actually wanted was the 300 tank stickers. Bizarelly some plastics come with stickers attached, yet others dont, so really do spoil the look.
    The stickers cost significantly more than the broken plastic panel I was replacing.

    Funnily enough, I’m thinking about custom paint for my T120 given that it’s going to be the last bike that I buy (all things being equal). I’m just beginning to formulate an idea, but it’s quite challenging.

    This is the kind of thing I have in mind…

    Here is the 675 Street Triple 675R I had, swapped a Speed Triple for this and then when I bought the dreaded black 765RS in 2019. I gave the 675R to my son, I then traded the black 2019 for a 2020 765RS.

    I had a 2015 675R that I used for the track and then upgraded to a 2017 RS, then a 2019 RS then a 2020 RS then a 2022 RS then a 2023 Moto2 RS and then back to a 2020 RS. They have all been used for track bikes only (except the Moto2 which I sold straight away as it was way too nice for track abuse) and the only issue I've had is with the 2020 RS and missed gears. I have just bought the RaceTorx gear shift support to hopefully alleviate any issues with gear selection.
    My main issue was going up between 2-3 and 3-4 under hard acceleration coming out of corners.
    I'll let you know if it works after my next trackday.

    Had a RaceTorx support on my 2020 RS since I bought it. Only had two missed gears in @2500 track miles.

    The white one looks nicest.
    I've never had any issues with gear shifts on my 2018 R with an aftermarket quick shifter.

    As you say the 675 didn't have the quickshifter issues, this was due to the 675 having upshift only and a completely different engine, gearbox and output shaft, the 765 is totally different in every respect, the 675 is a great machine but has no modern electronics, or other rider aids, the shorter 675 output shaft doesn't seem to flex the same as the 765. The same is true for the Speed Triple 1050 and the quickshifter/blipper, this is known for issues, the 955i is fantastic and rarely gives and trouble, I personally prefer the 955i to the 1050.

    I didn't have any issues with the 1st Gen STRS either which had up only shift, it was only when the auto blipper came out.

    My 2018r is a 765, not a 675.
