Okay, I need some help, please. Honestly, I should know better than to go anywhere near my bike with tools in my hand

Anyway, I bought an Optimate battery cable so I could hook up the the charger, and reckoned a direct connection to the battery was the optimal way forward. This morning I decided to fit it, and this is what happened...

    1. I first disconnected the negative terminal (yes, I checked online), and then disconnected the positive terminal.
    2. I reconnected the positive terminal with the positive lead from the cable in place. Very careful with the bolt as I didn't want to lose it.
    3. I then reconnected the negative terminal with the cable in place - or rather, I tried to but dropped the retaining bolt somewhere in the engine compartment (in fairness, my hands shake a bit at the moment due to my illness so nothing is easy!).
    4. Having scoured my various tooly things, the only bolt I could find in the right size was what I assume to be a brass one, as per the image below. I therefore used that.

I thought that I'd just check that all was okay before wrapping the bike up again, but... absolutely nothing when I turned the key. Zilch. Nada.

I guess I somehow blew a fuse, although I don't understand how that might have happened. I'm absolutely furious with myself, though, and have a couple of questions...
    1. Could it be due to using a brass bolt, in which case I can source an M6 stainless steel bolt to use as a replacement? Anyone know the length of the OEM bolts, though (I think it's 10mm but I'm not entirely sure)?
    2. Assuming I've blown a fuse, can someone tell me what fuse it would be, and point me to where it is on the bike? Does the bike come with spares, or do I need to get a replacement?
Sorry if I sound like a complete idiot, but I clearly am :(

From the photo it looks more like a plated bolt than brass but that’ll make no difference in fairness.

You can visually check the fuses and most likely you will have a spare in the fuse box (my 2013 Tiger has a spare for each rating in the fuse box).

You may have inadvertently touched the live to the bike and caused a short.

You really are having a bad day!

I'm not at all familiar with your bike but, if you look at the image you posted, on the far left hand side about half way down that picture is what looks, to me, like a fuse box. The number 2 fuse looks like it has the battery symbol and is, I think, marked 15A? I'm guessing that is likely to be a very good place to start - but probably worth poppping down to your local auto parts store and getting a few spares in before starting the job. Especially if you were a boy scout in your early years.

No judgement here - could happen to anyone - just hope you get it sorted!!

Your main fuse should be attached to the live terminal wire and often gets overlooked as everyone goes straight to the fusebox, that would be the first one I would check ;)

Check the main fuse, its a 30A one and it's NOT in the main fuse box.
It's located with the starter solenoid and usually there is a spare fuse. You will have to take the side panel off to find it and I am pretty sure that it's the side panel nearest to the positive battery terminal. Best of luck! Don't think you're an idiot we have all dropped things down in the depths. I too find that as I get older small screws and bolts tend to find their way into the depths of the bodywork. I recently installed a gear position indicator on my bike and the unit is held in place with an M4 grubscrew about 5mm long - and yes you've guessed it! That now lives somewhere in the bowels of the wiring loom and hasn't seen the light of day for months!!

One final point - yes the battery bolt is M6 and about 10mm long

Agree @Helmut Visor, but what you are pointing to I believe to be the inline fuse of the optimate lead.
Daft question @learningtofly the live terminal has been reconnected hasn’t it (and it’s just masked by the red rubber cover)? :eyes:

Yes, that's the Optimate inline fuse, and yes - the positive terminal is connected. You can see it to the right of the red cover, in fact.

I've checked the fuses in the fuse box, and they're all fine. I've not been able to identify the main fuse, and Google doesn't seem to be helping. If anyone has an image of what it looks like I'd be grateful.

Remove the Optimate lead and try again.

Thank you! Now checked that too (you were spot on), and it's fine. So all the fuses on the bike are fine - it's a bit baffling (to me at least).

I'd remove the battery and try to find the missing bolt in case it is the replacement causing the trouble. When you come to reinstall it might be essier if you thread the bolt through the hole in the lead(s) first then with one hand guide the leads and with the other have a philips screwdriver in the end of the bolt you can then push the end of the bolt to the battery post, and once it nakrs contact turn the screwdriver to start the thread.

Yes, I'll order a replacement bolt or three now! Can anyone see what part it is on here?

Edit: Not to worry, bought these. If this doesn't work, though, I'm going to have to get my dealer to collect it and sort out whatever I've inadvertently done

Don't overthink it. The replacement bolt you've used will be fine IMO, it's just a bolt. If it's the correct length and thread it'll be OK. Reading the procedure you followed, if you've blown a fuse it would be when you reconnected the earth terminal and you would've seen sparks at the terminal, certainly with a 30A fuse. I doubt the lost bolt could short out a live terminal as they are all insulated.
Check you haven't disturbed a plug or connector, particularly those in the ECU next to the battery.

As long as the positive and negative cable terminals are in hard contact with the correct battery terminals the circuit will be sound (the set screw material will not make a difference). Shame you are so far away as this should be fixable without throwing money at a dealer.

Thanks both. I was really careful when connecting the cable, and didn't disturb anything at all; I've since checked every connector and plug, and all looks absolutely fine.

I guess I'm going to have to get the bike collected and just face the fact that I'm going to have to shell out. I just don't understand what could have happened, tbh.

I agree the live terminal does not appear to be connected? Yes the Optimate cable is connected but is the live terminal lurking disconnected under the red boot?

Oh shit!!! I think that might be the problem (and apologies, @Boothman) :scream:

How bloody embarrassing - I'll nip out as soon as it stops raining and do the necessary (all being well)!
