@learningtofly That's the part of my pelvis that I fractured in my bicycle crash. And it was WAY more painful than my much more serious elbow fracture, I have to say. It's amazing how you learn that we engage our pelvis in nearly every move we make when part of it is broken. But mine healed just fine although walking was slow and painful for a number of weeks. Now I don't think twice about it (unlike that darned elbow). Interestingly both the emergency department physician and my orthopedic surgeon told me that PT wouldn't help and that I just needed to get walking on it as soon as I was able. I used a cane for awhile then "graduated" to walking sticks. I'd have used a walker initially but the elbow fracture prevented me from being able to do that. A good friend of mine and Mr. Sandi broke his pubic rami, too (and also a bicycle crash) but he did get physical therapy. Go figure. I definitely went through my fair share of ibuprofen! I hope your fracture heals quickly and less painfully than did mine. Thanks for keeping us posted!
Ah, that's interesting, Sandi, and thank you. Any residual affects as a consequence, or are you 100 recovered in that area? I'm 5 or 6 weeks in and can now weight-bear on that leg, although not fully as yet (I'd say about 80%). In fact, when I had my initial consultation and was asked to try to (slowly/carefully) lunge on that leg, it gave way completely. Feeling is now coming back to the knee and shin too, as it's been a bit numb/tingly up to now. Interesting that you were told that PT wont help but your friend got completely contrary advice - hopefully I'll get to hear what I should be doing during Friday's consultation (and I'm hoping my consultant is happy with the diagnosis, as I'm not sure he'd seen the MRI results when he sent (or perhaps dictated for his medical secretary) the diagnosis letter.
First ride of '23 yesterday, and it was amazing just to get out on the bike. I have to say that I feel like I've found my spiritual home with Harley Davidson - the bike really suits my style of riding, and I'm enjoying the whole image and lifestyle thing that goes with the marque (to the extent that I'm going to join the local Chapter in the spring). A Q&D from when I stopped for a vape...
Your bike looks fantastic very good looking machine. Hows the stage 2 fair? When I saw u had been out i looked out of my window hoping for similar weather being not too far away turns out wishful thinking. I can’t wait to get out again this year having lost so much time last year.
I can’t compare it to stock as the test bike I rode had a Stage 1. I will say, though, that it has a ridiculous amount of torque that literally has you hanging on if you get over-enthusiastic with the throttle. My only gripe is that I’d really like twin discs, as it’s a heavy beast and whilst the braking is decent enough it’s not in the least spectacular. Hope you manage to get out there soon - I know how frustrating it is when all you can do is look at the bike!
I'm so glad to see you back out and about on that beautiful Sport Glide, @learningtofly! I completely understand those feelings you have about "finding your spiritual home with Harley-Davidson". I don't love my Speed Triple RS any less than my Harleys, but I do enjoy the whole H-D lifestyle and community. My hubby and I have a friend who has an older Thruxton and some type of off-road-ish Suzuki (I can never remember the combo of numbers and letters that is the Suzuki's "name"). About six months ago he bought a 2020 H-D Heritage Classic and for quite some time had nothing good at all to say about it. But he stuck with it for some reason and now seems to have caught the Harley bug. And I think part of that is the "community". Anyway, I'm sorry I haven't checked in to see how you have healed up. The last report I saw from you was back in November and I've hardly been on the forum in the past few months. How are you doing these days? You must be mostly back to normal to be out and about on your Sport Glide. I'll be off my bikes again for a bit as I'm going having carpal tunnel and trigger finger release surgery on Jan. 11th. My clutch hand is not doing so well I (the "nice" way to put it) so I'm hopeful that this surgery will fix me up. Same side as my dreaded elbow and ulnar nerve surgeries. Thank goodness for modern medicine. Hope all is well with you!
Hey Sandi - so nice to see you back, and a Happy New Year to you. Thanks for asking how I'm doing. It turned out that the fracture was a misdiagnosis, and the issue was actually a bulging disc that was impinging on some nerve roots (and that suddenly went into overdrive whilst I was on holiday, likely caused by my over-enthusiasm in the hotel gym). I'm undergoing physical therapy at the moment, and luckily the pain has gone and my back feels a whole lot freer than it has done for some time. Unfortunately the affected leg is still a bit weak but I'll have to work on it over the coming months to build it back up again. Sorry to hear about your latest (hand) troubles - Harley's aren't really known for the lightness of their clutches so it must be a real pain (literally as well as figuratively). Please let us know how you get on with the surgery, and well done for hanging in there with everything you've gone through. You're a marvel IMO.
Hi @Sandi T sorry to hear you are back on the medical treadmill. I hope your surgery goes well and you get well quickly.
There is ! Horse power ! True Horse power , not the perception of it from over the top torque from massive powerless V twin motors. Had a friend who switched from HD to a Triumph Fatboy to 2000 Triumph 955 Sprint ! He flipped it ! Too much HD throttle twist ! Horsepower crept up ! Came on stronger than his Fatboy! HP got away better than Torque. He saved his life by selling it to someone else who knew how to use the HP.
Thanks, @Wessa. I appreciate your kind comments. I think this will be the simplest and (hopefully) simplest healing surgery of the three I'll have had since January of 2020. Hope you're doing well these days. Steve!
Yikes! That's quite the misdiagnosis. I'm glad your pain is gone and that your back is doing much better. Good luck with rehabbing that weaker leg. Just keep on keeping on with patience and persistence. I've heard that riding a bad-ass black Harley is really good "therapy". I'll let you know how my surgery goes. I'm anticipating (hopefully) that all will go smooth as silk and that my healing will be fast and complete. You are absolutely right about Harley clutches. I think I'll be on the same "program" after this surgery that I was after the one on my broken elbow and then again on my ulnar nerve--ride my Triumph Speed Triple which has a relatively light clutch pull and, key, a quick shifter! Thank you for your kind words, @learningtofly. But I don't think of myself as a "marvel", just as someone who is very blessed.
Yep doing good thanks. Still riding when I can. Planning has started for a European trip in June this year with @andypandy and possibly a couple other mates.
Glad to hear that you are getting in some riding, @Wessa. And that you and @andypandy are in the process of organizing a European trip in June. I'll be eager to hear more about your plans and then hear all about the trip itself! Mr. Sandi and I will be doing our annual June motorcycle trip up through northern New Mexico and Colorado with several riding buddies. Then in late July/early August will be heading to Sturgis again (last time was 2019) and will be taking "the long way" through Yellowstone National Park to get there. As Robert Frost would say, I have "miles to go before I sleep".
Your trip sounds amazing, I would love to ride in the USA. Unfortunately I have suffered a problem with my left knee late last week, which is preventing me riding. I see the consultant on the 24th January, so will hopefully get some indication on what the problem is. I’m hoping it is not going to impact my planning or trip. We will have to see.
Oh my goodness, Wessa. I'm really sorry to know abut your left knee and that it's bad enough to prevent you from riding. I hope you are able to find out what the problem is and get it corrected soon. And I really hope that it doesn't impact the trip you have in the works.
