    Check this out

Whatsapp updated your settings last night.

Crimewatch have advised your WhatsApp settings have changed overnight...

    Mine had...

WhatsApp has changed its group settings to include “everyone” by default so people you don’t know can add you to a group without your knowing. These people may include scam messages, loan Sharks, porn etc. You can change its default settings as follows:

    1. Go to WhatsApp:
    2. Go into Settings
    3. Go to Account
    4. Go to Privacy
    5. Go to Groups
    6. Change from (Everyone) to (My Contacts)

This is true. I checked mine!

Apparently this setting was changed in 2019. Chances are your phone has been like this for two years. No need to panic, Mr Mainwaring. :)

Interestingly I had to make contact with someone not in my contacts via WhatsApp. When I did this I got a pop up message asking if I wanted to proceed with the communication. So I think that you are safe even if this setting has not been changed. As the WhatsApp tag line says, “ it is end to end encrypted “. and not even WhatsApp can read what you are saying…..good job in my case…! But I’ve changed this setting anyway…!

Don’t do WhatsApp, Facespace, or any of the lot. This forum is the extent of my social media. I’d rather go outside.

My advice is to move away from Whatsapp since its owned by facebook and they are now changing how the manage data and moving the two services closer together.
Basically they exchange more data about you that is being sold on.

My advice is to look at services such as Signal and Telegram, both very good and don't harvest all about you and your friends and sell on.

Also, while "end to end" encryption sounds nice it still doesn't say how the backup of your conversation is stored or if that is encrypted.

I've been using Signal for quite a while in preference to WhatsApp. Facebook can't see message content but they still know who you're communicating with and when, and that's none of their business as far as I'm concerned. Signal was created by some of the team that created WhatsApp and works well. Privacy is a defining principle so I support their efforts.

What has this to do with WhatsApp settings being changed?
