World Of Triumph

    I've had these bookmarked for a long time, just in case, as they seemed to have all the necessary parts for my Street Scrambler.

    Tomorrow I have my PCP appraisal and the only minor issue is that my pillion seat (fanny pad) securing screw has gone on a mystery tour somewhere.

    So I checked the diagrams according to the VIN on World Of Triumph, and ordered the screw (it's really a small bolt, but whatever). The item that arrived was the right size, but not the same as the one on the Street Scrambler. It was silver, where the original is black. It is also smooth, where the original has an oversize knurled head for screwing by hand.
    The part they sent is a real pain to fit, as well - it's hard enough with the original item, with their smaller one it's very difficult.

    I contacted them to explain and asked them to point out the correct item, if I happened to have ordered the wrong part. They didn't - their reply confirmed I had ordered the correct part and they told me they would have sent a replacement, if they had been in stock, which they are not.

    Of course, a replacement would be no good, as it would be the same as the one they already sent, which is the wrong item.

    They offered to refund me, if I return the item at my cost. Also a ridiculous notion, as the cost of return would be at least as much as the cost of the part. I also told them this was unacceptable (as this issue is not my fault).

    So I decided to put it down to experience and just not shop there again, as well as letting other Triumph owners know that their parts may notbe the correct original Triumph parts, as claimed on their website.

    Shop there at your own risk.

    Okay I have to hold my hands up here and admit I made a mistake in my description of the original part. This doesn't change the situation at all, mind.

    Today, whilst prepping the bike for the appraisal, I found my original screw/bolt! So chuffed - I know it's a 'nothing' detail, but I like to keep my bikes in top notch and I want to give it back with everything it came with.

    The original is in fact matte, not black - but the reason I can't fit the shiney WOT part is because it's too short. So, regardless of colour, it's still not the same as the original, and still of no use.
    Sorry for the focus - ain't easy at a few inches...

    Why not go to your local motor factor or engineers shop, they will have the correct fastner at a fraction of the Triumph OEM part, my local engineer shop can supply almost all fasteners, it is worth trying.

    Any item from WoT is about 5% more than triumph retail prices. Beware esp if a large order.

    In case you missed it - I found the original part - it's in the photo ;)

    I do use a local engineer - two, in fact, one is a real bike fanatic, but he isn't around that much - the other is always keen to help and has done a great job with things like sheared disc bolts.

    However, we're talking about just a couple of quid for this part and cost was'nt the issue - having the wrong part and insisting it is correct is what got me miffed.

    According to the Fowlers parts list, the standard screw is M5 x 10.

    From that pic, the shorter screw appears to have a thread length that's about twice the thread diameter.

    I run mine with the solo seat and the rack. I just dug out the pillion pad (screw refitted to the pad for safe keeping) and the original screw is definitely M5 x 10.

    What year is your bike? It seems to me from what I've found around various sites, that the pre-2019 bike may have the shorter part and the 2019-on bikes the longer one.

    The shorter one definitely won't secure my fanny pad - in fact it won't even reach as far as the threads. Mine's a 2020 bike.

    Good point.

    I looked at the Front Brake Caliper and Disc section on the Fowlers site, and it's the original model with the 2-piston sliding caliper. They don't actually have the parts list for the 2019+ model. The WoT site is the same.

    Mine is also the 2nd version of the SS with the 4-piston Brembo front caliper. However, it's an early one - I bought it in July 2019 - so it's possible that the longer screw was introduced in 2020.

    If there was a change, then, because WoT, like Fowlers, don't have the updated catalogue online, you may have, unwittingly, ordered the wrong part.

    I'd give them a call and ask if they could check the parts list for the 2019+ model.

    An M5X10 in stainless steel is 20p at my local supplier, let's not forget Triumph do not make parts and fasteners etc in house, for example Drury Precision make parts for Triumph, they also make parts for another leading UK brand that thousands of us use for quality aftermarket parts, and for a lot less money, makes you think, it's just knowing who supplies whom, it is easy to get sucked into the "Triumph OEM parts", it is strictly not the case unfortunately.

    If the bike was mine, I'd be getting the stuff from wherever - but it isn't. It never has been - it belongs legally to Black Horse, but really to my local dealer - as they are the ones buying it back.

    Now many people will say "who cares? - They have enough money, they are a big company" etc etc - but I have certain standards and morals that I live by - and for me, keeping everything on the bike genuine (as long as it isn't mine) is a responsibility under my contract with them - so that is what I will do.

    This is also one of the reasons I won't get a bike on PCP again. My next bike will be purchsed, in full, and I can then feel free to do what I want again :)

    edit: Just like to also say that my local dealers are a great bunch of guys and have let me off a lot of charges and get away with things others would not do (such as a nasty chip down to the metal on the tank when I had my appraisal - "Don't worry about it, mate" and giving me 100% value and therefore equity on my next bike, which they also sold me at the original price, instead of its current one which is a saving of £300)
