    Hi All,

My names Dave and I live in Exeter. I've currently got a 2014 Multistrada Pikes Peak. I've always wanted a speed triple but never had one yet.
Things about the Multi I love are the performance and comfort. Things I don't like are reliability! Mines currently at the dealers with an engine noise that sounded like a failing bearing. It's coming to the end of the warranty period and I've lost faith in the bike after numerous little things and maybe a big issue.

I've had a triumph before, a 2005 Daytona 955i. Really liked that bike but always wanted a speed triple too.

My only worry with the speed triple is the comfort factor. I really struggled even on older bigger sports bikes like the 955 and a 2002 929 Blade. I used to get stiff and a sore Arse after about an hour whereas the Multi I can ride all day. I'm 6"2 and 16.5 stone so I'm hoping I'll be ok? Any comments about this and any other things most welcome!

Hi Clarkey Welcome to the forum, i also had a 955 and always fancied the speed triple too, i bought a used speed triple about 3 months ago and i find it comfortable i have done 3k on it, the majority has been on twisty roads, the longest run I've done on it has been about 300 miles without any aches and pains, the longest Ive been on a motorway is about 50 miles and that was fine, but maybe 200 miles of motorway might be different..I'm not in any hurry to find out!,you can get a comfort seat for it and bar risers which would help on long journeys.I'm just over 6ft and about the same weight as you and i find the riding position really good, the speed triple is more upright than the blade and the 955 and like i say you do get bar risers to make it even more upright if need be.I'm sure you would be very happy with a speed triple :)

Thanks Dougie that's great to know. I'm not a fan of big old tourers astheticly even though they are probably very comfy. That's why I went for the Multi and I'm sure the triple will be great too.

    Welcome Dave.

I chopped my Monster 1100s in for my current s3 94r for the same reason. Three times in a week it left me stranded and my faith was gone.

The speed is comfier than the monster, but not as comfy as my old air cooled multi. But it's comfy enough. Put a gel seat on it and that definitely makes a difference.

Nowt wrong with the brand, they make great bikes.

    Welcome Dave,
I was in exactly the same position as you last year, after a number of Triumphs I bought a new Multistrada S in 2013 and that spent an awful lot of time at the dealers having warranty issues fixed (search my user name on our sister Ducati forum for the full sorry tale). Living way down Cornwall meant a 150ml - 3hr round trip to Plymouth each time so I cried enough after 2 years and went back to Triumph (a Speed94R), and not regretted a minute of it.
Although the Multi was pretty comfy I did find I got bum ache after an hour or so due to the upright riding position and all your weight being there, I don't get that at all on the Speedie. First reaction was that the pegs are high and knees more bent but quickly got used to that and have had no knee problems. For spirited riding I'm finding the Speedie nigh on perfect for position and feel much more connected to the front wheel. If doing a lot of slow bumpy roads it does start to get to my wrists a little, but nothing too bad. On bad road surfaces I do miss the semi-active/long travel suspension of the Multi (the Speedie is a quite firm ride - more weight on the pegs is now my semi-active :)), and 3 figure speeds are shorter/less frequent due to the lack of wind protection.
The Speedie's a very different bike to the Multi but I'm loving it, for me - loads more character and fun, and after nearly a year completely faultless (touch wood).
Down side - I've always toured Europe with wife on pillion duty, not a sensible proposition on the Speedie (we're in our 60's), so this year we're hiring a BMW:eek: for a week in Austria. Will still be doing a bit of touring in the UK though (wife rides a Daytona 675)

Hello Dave and welcome in to the Triumph Asylum - Asylum? you may ask? All in good time Dave ;););)

Triumph Speed Triple? Probably the most character-packed bike on the market. You might need make minor adjustments to bar height etc, but it's so worth it. Just a fabulous fun tool.

    Hi Littleade,

The Multi type of road biased adventure/sport is as far down that road as I want to go really. I'm never doing a monster tour or going off road so for me it's unnecessary and rightly or wrongly I sort expect the people who have them bikes to be a bit all the gear, no idea! Don't want to offend though each to there own and like I say I'm probably wrong! I like to chuck on some soft luggage and just go, not plan or deliberate about a trip to much.

Yes I've read a bit about your time on the Multi as I'm a member of that forum too.

For me it's just to much money to be going wrong all the time. I know all brands have there issues but I am drawn back to simpler cheaper bikes. Triumph seem to take more time to develop bikes and no do such radical steps.

Hello , just bought a new speed and covered 650 miles in 2 days around Scotland at a fairly frantic pace with all my mates on Blades and r1s. Got off bike both days with nothing more than a slightly numb backside! Most of the mates needed physio . The only slight other discomfort I had was a slightly sore neck when speeds were silly on straights keeping up with them however I bought this with the intention of keeping top speeds lower as my fireblade I traded for this made high licence speeds too easy . I think its a fantastic road tool but like others mentioned Motorways are not too much fun above 85 . Don't know if a screen would make much difference .The bike will keep with anything on the twisty roads and handles superbly . Mine is the standard s model and I think the suspension is even fantastic on the basic model.

Brilliant cheers. I've just done 1500 miles through Wales, the Lake District and then Scotland. Overnighted in Oban and the next day glencoe, awesome scenery from top to bottom.

Test rode the new speed triple today for 3 hours. Frankly so smooth it's unreal! The throttle control in all modes is great, in road it's sublime. The suspension felt supple on typical British roads. It was stable at all speeds, wind was only a problem after about 110 for me which is well above my motorway cruising speed. That's without a fly screen which I assume will help a bit? The wind protection in the area which forces your knees out was better than my Multistrada.

Comfort at first felt rubbish and I was worried id be in agony very soon. For some reason though it didn't seem to get worse so that's good. I have long legs so the pegs feel really high, can these be lowered an inch or so?

Power wise it felt like I was nearer the stop than on my Multi but still a quick bike in the real world, maybe not quite as WOW as I was hoping. I would get a low boy and decat which may help. Test bike had twin arrows and a map to suit that, not quite noisey enough for me.

In short I was very impressed, it's got character, is very well built and rides with an easy, smooth sort of action but can also be pushed to pop and stop with those awesome brakes!

Yes black alpinestars. Yes I will once my Multi is fixed and can be traded or sold. I prefer the white I think. Hope I weren't going to fast when you saw me!?

you was at the countess weir roundabout.

Whats wrong with the multi? new or used? I've had exactly the same thoughts about the power.

Multi is great in terms of comfort and power. It handles ok, not as good as the speed. The high front induces a weave over about 95 so not much faster in the real world. It can be dialled out mostly.

My problem with it and other bikes like it is that it's 17k new, I paid 14k second hand and it has issues. Rear light, fuel sender and now a rattle or vibe in the engine which means numerous trips to the dealer. I've had other dealers turn me down flat when I've mentioned multistrada.

I want to go back to a simpler bike with a dealer near me. Plus it's British!

I'd like to buy from them but I've found some good deals not too far away.

Well they seem keen to do a deal (surprise surprise) and have offered an OK amount for the bike.

I will take a hit but I've lost a bit of faith in the Ducati. There are a few around cheaper but the lesson I've learned is I want total comeback with a dealer close to me. So all warranty issues can be sorted ASAP.
