Had a run over to Yondermans cafe today. Met @Octoberon and his partner and a few of his and her mates. Weather was blue sky and circa 7c, which was on the cool side but cracking riding conditions

It feels like we kicked off another biking year, today. I know you've been out a few times but this was my first proper run of '22. We ended up going back via Hathersage, Bakewell and Buxton as the Snake Pass is closed.

Together with my wife, I have brought her TIGER 900 out of hibernation. Today or tomorrow we will get the deposited license plate from the registration office and mount it again for the trip to the service. The Bonnies will be registered on an exchange license plate basis, which means we will each have 1 plate for 2 bikes and save a little on the insurance premium. After waking up the TIGER 900, we then played "virtual tetris" with our future 4 bikes to get the best and most practical use of our garage space.

 

The exchange license plate sounds like a really good thing to be able to do! We also play virtual Tetris in our garage...but as only one bike is mine and I do not move @Helmut Visor's bikes about the golden rule is that mine is always at the front .

 

Heck - I wish we could do something like that over here!

Last year I had 5 bikes insured, MOT'd and taxed for the road. I probably didn't manage to accumulate more than 350 miles between them - and a hundred of those were done in one 'leisure ride'!

I had enormous difficulty finding a company to insure five motorcycles and I remember, wistfully, the days when you could have a "rider's policy" from, initially, Norwich Union and then Carole Nash. First world problems, I know, but with all of the linked technology available to insurers and law enforcement these days it really shouldn't be made to sound so difficult. What is odd is that, for the insurer it must represent a significant risk reduction - you can only ride one at a time - and yet that's not reflected in the premiums quoted ...... when you can actually get a quote!

 

The rider policy was very useful when I had more than one bike, and you could ride your mate’s bike too (on a third party basis IIRC) I suppose their thinking is yes, you can only ride one bike at a time, but while you’re out on that the other bike(s) are at risk of theft

 

A lot of policies still do allow riding other bikes third-party only. I always try to get one with that clause if I can.

 

I also had a rider policy for years back in the day when only the cc limit was set with no individual machines specified. The "problem", for the insurance companies at least, was they didn't know what machine they were insuring. It could be an asthmatic, agricultural 1000cc ditch pump or the latest 1000cc SOTA super bike. A great policy for owning/riding multiple machines but obviously too much of a risk for the underwriters.

 

The "other bike" still has to have current insurance to be legally on the road though I believe.

 

Yes, I think you're right. I wasn't being clear in my last post. My policy allows me to ride other people's bikes (like my partner's) third party. It doesn't cover me additional bikes of my own. That's how I understand it, anyway.

 

We do the Tetris thing in our garage, too, with our four bikes. But I generally wind up being the one to move all of the bikes. More often than not, Mr. Sandi's bike is in a front (blocked in) space as he rides less frequently than I do. But I do move his bike...in fact he prefers that I do it so he doesn't have to!
