Well think its sorted now. Sanctions so when their 130 million or so runs out they will be broke. And no holiday to GB or America they must be gutted. Who in Gods name decided to have a vote were Russia had the veto and India stand there sucking their thumbs while GB supports them with millions each year. Gutless load of morons British American India and Nato and they think they can pull the wool over our eyes. Ukraine is going to get mullered but at least they are making a fight of it. See how these morons react or what excuse the come up with when Putin decides to grab a little more land.

The brutal reality is NATO, the EU, USA and the rest of the western world including us are not prepared to commit any form of military action in Ukrane for fear of triggering a 3rd world war so Ukraine are in that sense on their own.

Putin is a deranged despot who cares little for anything except himself and it's heartbreaking to see what he's doing to Ukraine and it's people. It's a strange thing to do when he claims they are one people. We can only hope this will be the beginning of the end for him and his cronies after what they're doing and the russian people realise what's going on when young russians start returning in body bags because of a war no one wants apart from him but I'm not holding my breath

Putin has been stashing up since taking the Crimea. Russian central bank has reserves of $640 billion enough for 17 months of export revenues. Russia also has $130 billion of gold reserves.

The little monkey has been saving up for this.

Was it right for Nato and EU to push for the old buffer zones that were behind the Iron Curtain to come into the fold? Actually on the Russian border is Estonia and Latvia. Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria, etc. are buffered by Belarus and Ukraine. These were Russian States. Putin has warned Finland and Sweden (who also have a border with Russia) not to join Nato.

It's not like Putin and Co. didn't warn everybody to stay back. As far as he is concerned Nato has been right up on his border piling up the weapons for a while now. Ukraine weren't that far off trying to join up.

Russia's revenues are similar to Spain, about 10th in the world, and yet they spend the second largest amount on military after the Shermans.

It's all a bit shitty, it always has been.

What happens if Russia takes Ukraine… gets the surrender from the military and says “Fine, you can have your country back with these conditions…” and then lists something to the effect of no NATO ever, still no nukes; some kind of “special relationship” with the Kremlin regarding military, fuel and food stuff and Russia to keep control of the two breakaway regions (giving him a land bridge to the Crimea) or some kind of half way house resolution which stops the fighting, and Ukraine remains largely sovereign but Putin has significant benefits. ???

This is a very good interview, regardless of what you think of his politics. He does somewhat dispel the myth of what's said about the expansion of NATO east. It would seem that they wanted to join of their own ( At last ) free will.

I can't see Putin being that passive about Ukraine. He wants is back under a Russian flag, or at the very least under firm Russian control.

I was just wondering about ways Putin could sell a win back home and try to deal with sanctions long term.

It makes sense, I'm not sure Putin thinks that way. His comment last week about retaliation if anyone interferes with his plans would suggest he is not up for compromise. Not yet, anyway. But what do I know? :)

"What happens WHEN Russia takes Ukraine." It seems to me it's an inevitabilty. What is not quite so predictable is how long Russia can "hold" their (for them) regained territory. If the Ukrainians can start NOW to organise for 'defeat' without surrender, they can make the extended conflict extremely painful for Russia - economically, socially and even militarily.

The Ukrainians should be - probably are - looking to start using organised guerilla tactics to disrupt Russian supply chains, particularly fuel, inflict what might, on the surface, seem like minor damage to strategic Russian logistics and ensure that, as horribly morbid and cruel as it sounds, there are lots of injured or dead troops returning to the motherland to make it clear to the wider general Russian population that the overwhelming might is not the overwhelming right.

There are plenty of historic precedents for wars being ended by medium to long term guerilla tactics and operations by a well armed, well supported and well motivated population.

I fear that this conflict will not be as quick or as simple as 'Vlad. the Impaler' likes to think.

Putin will never be satisfied with just the Ukraine or parts of it. He is the most vile of all creatures and must be stopped. His aggression cannot be tolerated or explained rationalized lt must end!

I think you're right. The US brought massive firepower to bear on Vietnam, but was eventually defeated by popular resistance.
If Putin thinks he can prevent Ukraine from being a hostile neighbour by invading it, he's going to produce the opposite effect.
Military force is never going to win hearts and minds.
