Hello all, I'm away to start working on my cylinder head as close to the final part of my engine rebuild and need to get a valve spring compressor to add to the arsenal. Don't want to spend a fortune but want to get a half decent tool. I've seen a few different styles of compressors, was wondering if anyone had had any experience, good or bad with the following styles? I quite like the looks of the 2 that hook onto the valve springs, the one in the red case looks a bit rudimentary and rough. Any input welcome
I'm afraid I've only ever used the rough and rudimentary one in the red case. Mind you, I've only ever used it on pre 1980 triumphs and a few tractors (HDs). It works a treat cause you can hold it in the vice while it holds the cylinder head so it allows you to use both hands to get the collets in and out. Which is a right fiddle sometimes. It was cheap and has lasted me years and years.
Red one ! Only one that will work !! Spring's on valves are recessed ? So you need something with a wide base/anchor. As you can't grab the spring with claws , as there's little or no space to pass claw leg's down ??

I've used something like that on my Triumph Bonneville America , when I did rebore to 904cc , I took opportunity to replace the exhaust valves , 92,000 kms old , it was originally designed for work on much bigger car cylinder head. Works fine for smaller valves and head's , used a few bodged adaptors. Got it done.
Well this has been eye opening thanks a lot for the input folks, will get a hold of the one in the case and do my worst!
Thanks again everyone for your input, I got hold of one of the red sets and must admit it was perfect, nice and easy to use and set up and got the head stripped no problem
I love doing rebuilds like this. Have you had a problem with the engine or are you just breathing new life into an old worn unit?
I had a big end bearing lock up on the crank and scrapped the crank and rod so have been rebuilding and trying to do everything I can whilst I'm in there since about September time. I have a thread on builds and projects if you are interested in more pics
