I don't follow US politics all that closely so I'm not qualified to comment on the current leader of the Executive.

Not sure what your point is about Boris.

I have no opinion on the guy. Couldn't care less. You're the one who made "the political angle" accusation.

Kind of like the jabs. Take me for instance.

    Once again...

Page 2 and go back from there. I was hardly the one who brought that arena into things.

You are one of those guys (?) who i'm going to follow, just to add to my incredulity as to how this human race works.....
And it makes me/us giggle of course. Not because I agree with you or you're funny.
    Lets please make that clear.
However, it's your opinion so fully welcome as it's a forum after all!
Keep it up! It's kind of amazing!

Didn't realize this is a race.

I just saw this thread, @BonnieCat. Thank you for informing us about what's going on in the Netherlands. I really hope that you will be able to start your new job when you're scheduled to in January. Please keep us posted. I'm glad to know you've got your Christmas provisions laid in. Please take care and you stay safe, too!!

What I don’t understand is if Omicron is milder than Delta and the other previous variants, and causes so few deaths and serious issues why is the world going crazy with lockdowns and booster jabs. ???

I think it's - at least partially - down to the fact that the variant is more virulent and more easily transmissible. That means that the impact from it - can you imagine it going unchecked through hospital, transport, utilities industries etc., etc., etc. - has far more widespread and far reaching (especially societal) effects causing a much wider and deeper 'ripple effect'.

It's often easy to concentrate or contemplate a particular aspect to this pandemic - serious illness, death, etc.,- in isolation when it's the wider picture that is probably actually more important.

I'd pretty much agree with that. The virulence of this strain is higher but as more data becomes available (bearing in mind it's only been around a few weeks) it appears the mortality and hospitalisation rates are lower. This is obviously good news, but still, when you multiply even that lower rate by the quantity of the population catching it, the spike could be large enough to have an impact on health services that are already stretched. So the waiting lists grow, and people are not treated for problems that aren't unrelated to Covid.

One other point that doesn't seem to get much coverage is the propensity for the strain to mutate again. The more it replicates as it spreads, the more likely that is to happen. The next variant could be deadlier than this one.

Sounds like Liverpool is already under pressure as they have just released this information/plea/propaganda (depending on your personal stance) video.
Hospital increases usually follow on a couple of weeks behind the infection curve, so it will be interesting to see the sitreps in January.
@Octoberon - a very valid point about mutations, the higher the population viral load, the sooner the next mutation. Flu vaccines change every year to target the more virulent/lethal strains.

To protect the health services. Stats show it leads to 60% less hospitalisations but the serious cases are just as bad, plus it's far more infectious so a smaller percentage of a much larger number could leave the NHS broken.
