Last film you watched.....

The Vanishing, with Ged Butler and Peter Mullan, loosely based on the real life disappearance of three lighthouse keepers from the Flannan Isles Lighthouse in December 1900.

 

I would imagine light house keepers (if confined for long enough) would get on each other tits enough to take a collective short walk to the cliffs.

Case solved.

 

Numerous theories have been put forward, from all three men drowning in a violent storm to one of the men going insane, killing the other two, throwing them into the sea then killing himself.

Visuals, great. Thought provoking, possibly. Entertaining in any way, nope.

So not a “ and they all lived happily ever after“ sort of film then?

 

Went to our local "Merlin" cinema (a small scale chain of cinemas - many in old, traditional theatre/cinema buildings) in Wellington, Zummerzet, on Monday to watch "The Last Bus".

It's a poignantly whimsical tale told in current and flashback time settings and centres on the story - and adventures - of an old man taking a journey from John O'Groats to Lands End by bus. Although it's rather pedestrian and predictable it has some really moving and emotional moments and the central character is very well portrayed by the redoubtable Timothy SPALL.

Scottish viewers will, no doubt, recognise many of the scenes - I have the feeling that most, if not all, of the film was shot in Scotland, despite the disconnect that might suggest from the storyline. And therein lies my only real beef with the film - it would have been SO much better if the settings of the various scenarios that comprise the overarching storyline had been, in part at least, shot in the actual locations .... but I guess that would have added enormously to what is, clearly, a low-budget 'indie' production.

Incidentally, my wife thinks that my frequent shuffling, mumbling and meandering "imitations" of a geriatric pensioner are more like a rehearsal for the - impending/imminent - real thing rather than an amusing portrayal!!

As an aside, there was a very loud (an old cinema building but a VERY modern DOLBY sound system!) trailer for the soon-to-be aired "No Time To Die" Bond movie and it looks like it's going to be a fantastic swan song for what has to be THE BEST EVER series of 007 movies! Daniel CRAIG has taken the Bond mantle up a level or two since he took it on.

 

Both films BARAKA and SAMSARA. Places you've never seen. Mesmerising and wonderful.

Watched a few lately, tring to spend some free credit on the play store so buying movies.
Gotti... usually really like gangster films but this is pretty shite!

Legend... film about the Krays, very good! Yer man plays both brothers very well. Really good film.

Lawless... about moonshine, yer man again that acted in Legend. Another good film.

 

Gran Torino. Clint Eastwood as a gritty, racist, newly widowed war veteran who ends up defending his immigrant neighbours and nailing the gang bullies threatening them.

The real "TFR"...

 

If you like westerns try watching Old Henry, it's by far the best western since Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood

 

Yeah I'm actually looking forward to that one.

This flick was pretty good too. A bit heady, but well worth a look if you like Westerns.

 

That is high praise, indeed, David! I've not seen it so we'll have to take a break from binge-watching The Blacklist to watch Old Henry.

 

It stars Brad Pitt....that's enough to pique my interest! And I do like Westerns so that would be a bonus.

 

So, has anyone seen the new Bond movie? Is it any good. I understand it’s a pretty long film so I’d better get a comfy seat!

 

2h 43m long. I was nodding off half way through.

Tbh, I thought the plot was crap. Disappointed with the motorcycle chase. Great action but too short. Lots of surprises in the film without giving away any spoilers.
