All the fuel stations around here seem to be sold out and the fuel gauge in my car is just above empty, but I'm happy to weather it out. Having said that, I'm retired so I don't need to go far other than doing the weekly shop. There's no shop in our village, but its only about 5 miles to the nearest supermarket. It does annoy me though that the biggest culprits appear to be people of a similar age to myself, who have nothing better to do than fill up their cars just for them to sit on their drives for the majority of the week when others probably need fuel far more urgently. My son in law is a self employed builder and he did manage to get fuel for his works van this morning, but he told me he was driving around on fumes all weekend.

Why are they idiots ? They have just filled their tanks as normal. Nobody is driving around, trying to burn it for no reason. It's not like filling their house with bog rolls. They cant store it by the tanker load in their shed.

I work on Saturdays as a driver at a large (prestige German brand) main dealership in Exeter. My first task - at shortly after 0800 - was to go and get a can of diesel for the diesel powered pressure washers used by the valeters. BIG wake up call!

Being a smug bastard driving a propane powered car, I had completely forgotten about the "fuel crisis" and went round to the fuel station that I use every week to do the fueling of around 18 to 20 "service runners". The fuel station had 2 coaches - full size - and a truck fuelling up. There were cars queued to get into the forecourt threatening to block a roundabout about a hundred yards away! SO .... onwards and upwards - I'll go to the next nearest fuel station. Guess what? A long queue only to find no diesel available - this is a station with probably nine or more multi-fuel pumps! The nearby Sainsbury's fuel station was also rammed with queuing cars and vans!

What kind of insanity is this? People are being told NOT to panic buy - there's plenty of fuel available, there just may be some minor delays getting it to the point of sale. If the majority of people carried on as per normal and bought fuel ONLY when it was needed the supply and demand equation would almost certainly even itself out. Or, maybe, limit themselves (FAT 'KIN CHANCE) to, say, £30's worth then there would be absolutely no need to worry about when their next fill might be needed.

To paraphrase an H. L. Mencken expression - nobody is going to go broke underestimating the stupidity of the general population!

That's just it, they may have "just filled their tanks' but it's not normal. There was no problem before the media blew this up out of all proportion. People who would "normally" leave filling up until they were maybe down to 1/4 tank or less are topping up "just in case".

I dont get your point at all. Everyone needs fuel, and why wouldn't they fill their tanks when they at the garage, Nobody just puts £10 worth in these days, And nobody is using any more than they normally would. The problem is with the supplier, not the customer.

I witnessed a fine illustration of just how self centred some peoples thinking is on Saturday while waiting to refuel the Scrambler. The station is one of these "mini supermarket types. The woman in the next lane to me filled her tank then disappeared inside to pay and was gone for ages, during which time the 2 cars in front of me had refuelled and payed. Drivers in her lane were starting to get out and ask where the fek was this woman when she appeared with 2 carrier bags full of crap and nonchalantly walk back to her car "as normal" If I had been in that lane I'm sure i would have had to say something, as I wasn't I was pissing myself.:joy:

I saw one of a firefighter doing a blog showing cars on the freeway (I think they are called) blowing up after the driver lit a cigarette whilst carrying bags of ‘gas’.

Other videos showed people filling up what looked like fish tanks (open topped).

    Are people that bloody stupid?!?

    AND they get a vote?!?

No wonder the world is in the state it is.

In the old days didn’t clever people get an extra vote so as to balance out the fuckwits that didn’t know the first thing about economics or foreign affairs?

Sounds cruel but why does everyone get a vote? Why should someone that knows nothing about anything get a vote?

Surely an exam to prove the electorate understand what it is they are voting for (regardless of how they vote) should be important?

    Sorry digress.

On reflection why not pay the Daily Mail and Daily Star to tell their readers to jump off a cliff and that would solve so many problems.

It's still 100% a supply problem. As i said, nobody is "using " anymore fuel than normal. And they must have all filled their tanks by now.

Because Daily Mail readers are as well informed as anyone. You might be remainer, by the sound of it. And in my opinion, you should be one of those not allowed a vote.. Because you were given one on brexit, but refuse to accept the result.

That's a good point about people who know nothing about anything getting a vote. In the long lead up to the Brexit vote I saw a local TV news report where a numpty from Bolton said she was voting to remain because the EU gave us lots of money ffs.

The problem I suspect Mick is that they're buying more. Filling Jerry cans, water bottles etc, filling and topping up where before they may not have done. It's not normal to see 100 yard queues outside petrol stations. Something unusual is clearly happening. And funnily enough I pulled up at a pump the other week and the previous user had put £10 in. We're not all rich, having it large in the New Forest, claiming for non existent kids. :p:D

It's bonkers here; I have enough fuel to just about get to work and back tomorrow in my car then I am out. I have a long commute and have passed six petrol stations tonight on my way back home, none of which have fuel yet the roads today are really quiet - people seem to have filled their cars and jerry cans and are now staying at home to conserve it whilst people who have to get to work are struggling to find any. Mr Visor has actually just taken my car out (I am only just home) as we have heard of one station that has fuel to see if he can get any - the worry is that in looking for fuel, the fuel that I need to make it home from work is used up should he be unsuccessful :joy:.

Even if everyone filled up 2 cars instead of one, there should still be enough fuel in the garage tanks to cover it. And I am very much enjoying "having it large in the new forest" thank you kindly :) But then why shouldn't i ? I spent 50yrs laying bricks for a living. In some pretty shit conditions most of the time too.,And i have never claimed a penny from the state, for anything. I never will either.

Lorry driving is a shit job today, That's why over 100,000 have left the industry, and found other work, in the last few years. Crap money, camera spy, and tracker in the cab. traffic stress getting to the drop off's on time, Countless nights away from home. Trying to sleep in noisy laybye's ect. pissing, shitting, and washing wherever you can.. Add to that, the cost of getting an HGV licence in the first place. It's about time they got paid a really good wage, and enough overnight money to cover a decent place to sleep. Eddie fucking Stobbart, and his counterparts, have been making a fortune off the drivers backs for far too long.

The issue is that normally there would be a steady stream of people who fill when needed through the week and that is catered for in the supply chain. Once the media stirred things up all those people came to refuel all their vehicles and jerry cans at the same time, the supply chain is not set up for this spike in demand thus the tanks run dry. It would happen if you got everyone to go out to the supermarket tomorrow and stockpile milk, there's no problem with the supply chain it's just the abnormally high demand spike.
