E10 Petrol

    I went for a ride out to the Lakes yesterday with my 2 sons, the eldest put E10 fuel in his Panigale 1299s, you guessed it after around 30 miles the engine management light came on and it started cutting out at junctions, the manual says suitable for fuel up to E10 and on that basis he put the E10 in. My STRS played up something terrible when I put E10 in (I had let my son know at the time). My other son never puts E10 in his bike (Suzuki Katana), we took it easy going straight back home. Today I fully drained the tank of E10 and re filled with E5, after 5 minutes stationary running the engine management light went out, I took it for a 30 mile ride and it ran perfect never missing a beat and the engine warning light never came on. I did the same with my STRS and it has been running normally since. It seems some cars and bikes are affected whilst others are not. For me its E5 all the way. Early indications are that the famous 2 breakdown services are getting E10 related call outs. I put samples of both E10 and E5 through a strainer that is designed to trap water, try it and you will be shocked what you see. For those that can be bothered I think you would be able to separate the additives, a little like the process of taking the dye out of red diesel (although that is illegal) not so for the E10, although I personally could not be arsed with the faff.

    Cue a huge increase in E5 super unleaded sales. The fuel companies are going to love this.

    My 2019 Speed Triple 1050RS seems to be running fine on E10. Were you able to establish any fault codes when the MIL light came on?

    E10 is obviously refined to a set standard so if the vehicle manufacturer specs E10 as OK then obviously it should run fine. I've experienced a slightly lumpier idle since using E10 in the Street Scrambler so I'm back to using E5 to see if there is, in fact, any difference. I've not done many miles since the refill with E5 so the verdict remains to be seen. Maybe running engine mods and remaps from standard could also be a potential issue.

    Is E10 a new thing in your part of the world? We've had it damned near forever here in the USA. All five of my bikes (Speed Twin, XR1200x, KLR, ST1300, '73 CL350) run fine on it. My complaint is the imprudent use of resources. We use a lot of fertilizer, groundwater, and energy to grow corn to be used for ethanol production. It's a strictly political issue here; agriculture and the Ethanol industry lobby heavily for increased use. I believe we should use corn to feed cattle and hogs, and for the making of whiskey...

    I read England was going all e10 .so
    asume e5 must be more normal fuel can you still buy 95 octane we have e10 here but not many people use it I dont

    We have premium unleaded, also called "Super Unleaded" or Ultimate Unleaded" in the UK which is 97+ octane and is (currently) E5 as opposed to standard unleaded at 95 octane which is now E10.

    I am guessing its over 20cents above 91 the 91 octane as in our case here in aus

    Currently in Ullapool and the petrol station has 8 pumps in rather tight space and this morning had queue of a dozen vehicles (cars and camper vans) along the road waiting to get in. Thought I'd be cheaky and jump queue to see if there were any free pumps I could squeeze in. Turned out 6 were free, and queue was held up by about 4 cars of various sorts trying to get to the 2 pumps with E5 fuel. No good reason I could think of, probably just scared of ethanol.

    In the past I've tried super and regular and can't say I could tell the difference so never felt the need to waste money. However the other week I noticed more pops and bangs than usual on the overrun and didn't feel quite right - perhaps the recent change to E10 I wondered. So refuelled with super E5, amazed at how much better it felt, don't think it was in the mind 'cos I'm tight and have no desire to pay an extra 5 or 6p/ltr if I can avoid it. :rolleyes:

    If anyone is worrying about E10 there are several options.
    1) Sell your bike.
    2) Buy a newer one.
    3) View YouTube for the various methods for removing ethanol from fuel (select your favourite), but don't forget to add octane booster!
    4) Use Superunleaded or its equivalent
    5) Use something like Castrol Valvemaster.

    Pay your money and make your choice.
    It's all political and yet one more weapon in the Govts arsenal to help rid the roads of ICE vehicles via "back door taxation"

    1) Not going to happen.
    2) I have one, it's a year old.
    3) Too much faffing about.
    4) Check, option 1.
    5) Option 2

    I've now run a couple of tanks of SU E5 and the idle does seem better, the difference isn't massive but does seem to be there. How long before the increase in SU E5 sales comes to "someone's" attention I wonder and it too goes E10?

    One thought is if the engine needs to learn the new fuel? I have read about a process that owners can do to reset the fuel map, but cannot remember exactly how it is done. Something like start and run it until the fan switches on, maybe more than once?

    Forced Adaption - start from cold without touching the throttle, warm up until the fan comes on then idle for a further 12 minutes.

    Ive put E10 in my Street cup and my Breakout 114 and never had any issues ?? Most garages near me dont have other options anyway
    so i'm buggered if i did have probs

    we've gone from Big Oil influencing national policy to Big Corn.

    personally, being mostly vegetarian, i would like to see corn used to feed people, and cattle and hogs mostly retired as a food source. but to each his own. my machines run well on ethanol laced gasoline. my garden machines don't, as a rule, so i either drain the stuff out, buy non-ethanol fuel, or rebuild the carbs every year

    The above data came from Tritun online which has now been superseded by Triumph Technical Information online. The procedure appears to have changed in the latest Service Manual for my Speed Triple 1050 RS:
    Start from cold without touching the throttle, warm up until the fan comes on then turn off for at least 60 seconds to allow the adaption settings to be stored in the ECM memory. I assume all models are similar but not sure without reading specific service manuals.
