Evening all, new member here, looking for advice. Have been riding for 25+ years, had various Hondas, several VFR’s and more recently on my third BMW GS. I love the GS for touring and long day trips, no intention of changing it, but lately I’ve been craving something more … raw, the kind of thing you would ride for a couple of hours just for the sake of riding - with the BMW it’s more about where you go rather than how you get there, if that makes sense?

I’ve always liked Triumphs, tried a few but never owned one. Recently rode my sons Street Triple and liked it far more than I thought I would. Riding position is a bit cramped on my old knees, apart from that it put a smile on my face. Budget is about £5k so I wondered about a Speed Triple - how does it compare to the Street Triple? Or anything else in that budget?

    Thanks for any opinions.

Have you tried the sprint st or sprint 1050 they are like the VFR but in my option much better. There is a shop in Bourne end called the motorcycle shack. They have a terrific blue sprint st with i think 3000 miles on the clock and one owner. Welcome to the family and keep us updated.
    Joe.

That’s Bourne End in Bucks I guess Joe. There’s several Bourne Ends around. Near Wooburn Green.

The new bikes are too refined for me, peddled the 120.

I own a 2005 speed triple, and the wife's got a 2008 Street Triple. The speed is heavier, but a lot more torque lower in revs. The street is lighter and more easily flickable - it brings out the inner hooligan in me. I like them both, for different reasons.
The answer is to test ride both, I suppose.

Sorry its the Woburn green area in the soho mills trading estate there. As you ride in turn right between the buildings and the motorcycle shack is there on your right.

Hi Adastra and a very warm welcome to the friendly forum. I have owned both the 955i and 1050 Speed Triples, also several Street Triples, 675 and 765. The 1050 Speed Triple has more torque and mid range than the Street Triple 675, the speed is minimal between the two, around 5 MPH in favour of the Speed Triple, academic in the real world, I personally found the 955i Speed Triple a better all round machine than the 1050 and it was ultra reliable and never let me down once, I also liked the round headlamps that give it a more menacing look. However I sold the Speed Triple and bought a Street Triple 675r, it has uprated suspension and better brakes, the 675 Street Triples have 3 models, the standard base model, the R and then the RX, this has the Daytona 675 rear sub frame and sharper looks, some have quickshifters (up only). As others have said try the 2 and then make your decision, from my experience though the Street Triple is a far more exciting machine to ride (the colours are also more exciting than the current 765 range). I don't know where you are located, however Hunts Motorcycles in Manchester have a very low mileage Speed Triple in stock and could test ride that. I would not go back to the Speed Triple and currently have a 2020 765rs. Some Speed Triple 1050s suffer from gear selection issues (mine did) and I had to put upgraded parts from Germany in to get it right, in contrast my 955i was superb. The 675s have very little that go wrong and mine was ultra reliable, you get a lot of bike for your money with a 675 and there are plenty of nice ones around. Ride safe all.

Street triple gets my vote! Its simply pure fun! It's the bike you go to just for giggles... and a little rocket too!

From my point of view, I have a Sprint ST 1050 and a Street Triple 675.
They are obviously quite different, if you have had a VFR i would imagine it would be similar to the Sprint.
I describe the differences like this...
When you crack the throttle the Sprint feels like someone has their hand on your back pushing you along. The Street Triple feels like someone has grabbed your wrists and pulling for all they are worth to try and get your shoulders out of their sockets.
The Sprint with its lower rev limit also doesn't feel so exciting as you rattle through the gears pretty quickly. Also after riding the Street the Sprint definitely feels "lazy" in corners and you feel like you are bullying it into going where you want. The Street feels much more "point and shoot" and just goes where you think you want to go. The downside is that the Street is definitely quite a bit more skittish over uneven surfaces.
Obviously being naked the Street for longer trips at higher speeds is much more tiring to ride, but if you want a weekend thrash machine, i cannot see myself wanting anything else. As people have said it does encourage the hooligan in you.
I've never ridden a Speed Triple but I'm not sure I would ever really want to.

Triumph Sprint ST 955i Only 3,449 miles and in superb condition, small scratches on one panel, scott oiler, datatool alarm, one owner from 24/9/2001.
One of the sought after versions of this classic motorcycle! £ 2,995.
This is their ad but i found them very approachable and willing to haggle. But to me that bike in its condition is worth it. Only my opinion but i am biased towards the 955's

Yes you had the 1050. Different machine the 955i can do things you don't want to i have had four of them and you crack that throttle open and it will lift that front wheel and it will wrench your shoulders right out. But the love of the bike is you don't have to keep changing gear. You want to pass a car no matter what gear you pull out twist the grip and it goes like stink and you can hear those injectors open up and start to growl.

That is a steal. Often thought this was the perfect bike. Fast enough, fun enough and it would do
High mileage without question. Wish I had enough room for this bike.I think I could make this into a lovely long term relationship…
