So, a round trip of about 90 miles to get a tyre fitted and what do I see when I get home and clean it, a scratch on the rim. It was quite small but being stupid I tried to do something about it. Now I have a polished spot that doesn't match the rest of the finish. Any ideas how to get the original finish back? It's not polished and its not brushed like the engine casings.

    Cheers

Blimey - that's annoying. How about a rub with a Scotchbrite pad?

Bummer. Seen people use a bit of tin foil to rub chrome and regain the finish. Don't know if it works or not but worth a try. Then i would clean the whole rim with solvol autosol should bring it back. If it is a deep scratch rub in some beeswax to seal it.

Thanks, problem is I think they have some sort of clear coat finish on them like a clear lacquer, so any form of polishing or abrasion just makes it worse. Wonder if one of the car ally wheel repairers could do something. Would have to fix on the bike though. That or a rim sticker!

That throws a spanner into the works. Yes sure some of the chips away peeps must have had this kind of repair. God failing that you will get a new bike and I will take the old one. Sure you will get it sorted mate.

Report it to tyre fitter - advise that you will get a price and then charge them. Threaten to shame on open forum. I hate unnecessary damage:mad:

I should have checked it there and then, but I was soaked and just wanted to get away. Have to be honest though, I did make it a lot worse!

It is real shame that it was damaged in the first place. If the problem really does get to you, see if you can get a new wheel or rim…

edit: as an after thought you can’t see it when you are riding :)

I'm being a bit sarcastic, it's certainly not worth getting a new wheel. Just a little mark really, I'm more annoyed that I made it worse than anything else.

Checked with the Excel rim importers, and if anyone is interested they are anodised then clear coated. Must be very weak anodising as they polished out with very very fine paper and hardly any effort. Not sure if it is worth trying to clear coat the polished bit to dull it down, suspect I would just make things even worse. Rim sticker it is then!

    Cheers

Don't worry I'm on my way to pick it up. But more realistic is the sticker or a small balance weight. Enjoy the bike till winter comes then take another look at the situation. I promise if we ever meet each other I won't say that's a bad scratch there.
    Joe.
