Hi guys, i have joined here on behalf of my mate who is dyslexic.
the right hand side exhaust is hot and the left hand side is tepid, he has a 1960 T120. things i have done, compression test one kick 25ppf, 4 kicks 75ppf on both cylinders, ive swapped the carbs over, and the coils nothing makes any difference, ive set the tappets cold to 2tho inlet and 4thou exhaust, has any one heard of a this ,or know any reason why this would be happening. cheers steve

    Left side isn't firing.
It will be point's or a broken wire maybe a dirty fouled connection ??

i forgot to mention that it has electronic ignition fitted. points where my first thought, and the spark is very strong both sides, the lhs does get hot eventually which made me think they maybe some difference in the set up on both carbs which is why i swapped them over, and the reason for doing the same with the coils just in case one was breaking down, i set both air screws to one and a half turns out, and adjusted each one very slightly in both directions, when i did the lhs the bike began to run a little rough but kept going, the rhs when i did the same caused the bike to stall, when i removed the plugs both are dark and wet, i cleaned them and did the same after running for 5 mins, both again dark and wet. if the lhs was not firing i would have expected a clean wet plug. i am puzzled.

I will swap the ht leads over today, some thing i forgot to do also check the flow of fuel from both taps, i will also try a timing light on the leads when running.

HT leads are fine, but timing light will not light up on lhs, pointing towards electronic ignition box, got some test to do on it tomorrow, ive checked coils on pick ups all good.

Cheers Littleade, not had much experience with the pre unit electronic ignitions, are the coils wired in series as they are on later 650 unit motors with Boyer EI Stephen Robinson and if so there is a chance that you have a duff cell in the battery and if this is the case the second inline coil will get a weaker spark causing plug fouling and misfires.

I have found the problem, First question i asked my friend was are the plugs new, his reply was yes. i should have tested them under load, i replaced the lhs plug and got an improvement, so that led me to raise the slide on the lhs, slowly i could hear the engine pick up , so i removed the carb and stripped it down, both side plug where wet, so i removed all the jets and internals and cleaned with carb cleaner, i also lowered the needle both sides by one notch, This improved its running , after i adjusted the mixture screws on both carbs its like new again, both pipes getting hot equally. Initially i thought that the mk3 box was at fault, but because it ran on one that could not have been the case as it contains a switching diode so moral of the story is check the basics first, despite what your told. Thanks for all your help.

Oh yes so true (story coming)
my mate got me round to look at his Kawasaki 250 triple he had blown his engine and got a replacement from a scrap yard. I made up a connection for the oil pump but couldn't get any oil to go from it to the carbs no matter how many times we kicked the engine over. thought that maybe it needed the engine running to build up enough pressure but the bloody thing just wouldn't start, it would cough and splutter odd back fire but no go. after a whole day trying to start it I got my brother to help another half day kicking pushing it up and down the road still no go. (now I will mention at this point that I did notice at the beginning that it had three HT leads above the engine and the outer two crossed over left to right & right to left I mentioned this to my mate and he was adamant that was how they were, brother noticed it also but we informed him that was right) anyway there we are all hot and sweaty from pushing it up and down the road when another mate from up the road rode up on his CBX 6 (man i lusted after one of those) and asked what the problem was we went through every thing and he was as stumped as us, then I mentioned the HT leads again and he said swap them over no no we said that was correct cant do any harm he says so just to show him we swapped them over mate kicked it over just the once mind you and it burst into life the oil shot up the tube and he road off up the road closely followed I may add by the spanner I had in my hand fortunately for him he was going faster than the spanner. so the moral to the story is be methodical and don't believe what anyone tells you regarding what they have or haven't done. the same would apply to new parts just because a part is new doesn't mean it isn't broke.
