Having had another look when I got home, I’m not convinced that my clutch is fully disengaging. I noticed that it was crawling very slightly when in gear, with the clutch pulled in. The cable is adjusted to the maximum, but using a lever I can pull the clutch fork forward a bit more.

I might try replacing the cable before doing the plates.

Are plates a difficult DIY job?

There are videos I’m sure of clutch plate change but the one I remember is high speed,it is useful however but debatable if soaking plates or dry plates is best option, some better informed chap on here will no doubt enlighten you.

Well your cable must be in need of changing if you have no adjustment left, that’s cheapest option I’ve got 12k and 8yrs on mine still loads of adjustment left so that’s deffo not correct, better to rule out cheap things first before going down the clutch plate route which is a can of worms for different reasons.

Just thought I’d update this thread, in case it helps anyone else in the future...

I replaced my clutch friction plates, steel plates (Surflex Kit, rather than OEM) and clutch springs from Triumph. I’ve done a hundred or so miles since and the bike is perfect now - better than its ever been. The gearbox feels much better and finding neutral is no problem anymore.

When I took the old clutch out, it wasn’t dry but all of the friction plates were stuck together - about 5-6 of them all came out in one and the remaining few were stuck in pairs generally.

    Hi,

I have recently purchased a 2017 Speed triple R (registered Sept 16) with 4,600mls with full service history. The bike has the Triumph quick shifter fitted and Arrow cans, when shifting using the quick shifter I experienced a false neutral a few times. Last Thursday I had just pulled off a main road on to a B road and as I went through the gears I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd and hit a false neutral (again) so hit the lever again and the rear wheel locked up (luckily only doing 30 MPH) and the bike started skidding so I pulled the clutch in and nothing happened! . I somehow managed the stay on the bike after so big snake slides and came to a halt, the bike wouldn’t move even with the clutch pulled in so I rocked the bike back and forward a few times (still in the middle of the road!) and pushed it to the side of the road and phoned for recovery. I have been riding high powered bikes for over 30 years and never experienced a gearbox lock up before. This could have been a lot worse and thankfully I never came off or doing a higher speed than 30 mph.. Reading the forums some people has experienced false neutrals as well which points to the quick shifter being an afterthought rather than designed for the gearbox. Lost all confidence in the bike.

    Hi derek,
Bad news for sure but is the cable broken?
Does the actuator arm move or is the spring broken (although that'd be stuck in)
Can you select a gear by rocking the bike (with the engine off) back and forth?
Normal false neutral selections are on the 4-5th gear selections on the rs/newer box so I hope its a simple one for you.
    Good luck sir.

Hi, the clutch cable is fine, I will know more when we get it stripped. Going to take the clutch off first and have a look.
When it hit the false neutral and I hit the shifter again it sounded like a bag of spanner’s then locked up and skidded for 200 yards!!
