i know what tv series he was on but no idea what his name is

That would give it away, it was on in the 60s I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid

 

Bloody Skippy I wondered why I could keep hearing a tutting sound in my ear when I asked Dougie what series. (just thought it was Tiglet and Dougie)
I used to watch that all the time, but couldn't place him now at all, must be the alcohol to blame
