Ms Maitlis has her own agenda but unfortunately lets this come to the fore during supposedly impartial news reports on the BBC. I do believe she has already been called to task over her attitude to some interviewees. Oldfart
I listened to that Hardtalk interview, what an interesting bloke... took no shit from the interviewer I’m glad to say. I’m curious on how this will pan out. Irrespective of any allegiances (which muddy the waters) on a purely legal footing it’s hard to call how this might go. And as Dershowitz points out, the ramifications will play big issues down the line as an example case for future 1st amendment cases. Its an education!
Thanks for your reply, that’s pretty much the way I saw it and I was really impressed by his no nonsense approach. It’s refreshing to hear a non partisan, well educated and intelligent view, something that’s been missing from debate in general recently.
The BBC are busy pushing the ‘woke’ agenda. This doesn't actually mean equality for different ethnic, religious, or sexual groups. It means discrimination against everyone who isn't part of those groups in favour of those who are, so that those pushing the agenda can virtue signal. Don't get me wrong I am all for equal rights, but equality should mean EQUALITY and a meritocratic ethos rather that the twisted narrative the woke hypocrites are peddling who then use the epithet ‘NAZI’, ‘RACIST’, ‘MISOGYNIST’ etc. to describe anyone who dares to point out how fundamentally flawed their ethos is.
....which begs the question why she is still being paid at the taxpayers expense to peddle her views under the BBC charter.
It’s pretty divisive as an extreme, and it can easily be taken as extreme as the right wing agenda gets taken, in my humble opinion, then the media wafts the flames of rhetoric and you end up with polarised walls of hatred facing off...
I think Trumps speakers on the day were vey clever and each said one thing emotive and rabble rousing. So they all had deniability, individually.
Therein lies the legal discussion... a mile and a half walk to “cool off”, no specific instruction... but interpretive rhetoric... very interesting to the observer, but I’m very sorry for the ordinary folk on either side of the political spectrum, who probably fall into the centre part of a bell curve of “ideology” and feel dragged about by the outer fringes. But for a non-trump political supporter, I thought that lawyer was very impartial and clear cut on what he was wanting to protect... the constitution much more than Trump... or did I misinterpret that?
Just as the office of President has needed protection so to the constitution absolutely. And so charges or not. We are left with a man and his close colleges who put the office and the constitution in this position. Whether the Trump and his colleges, had the intention to incite a coup or not, and even for a moment putting aside whether the alleged incitement was of a coup or a protest. Whats left are extraordinarily poor, and repeatedly bad, lapses in judgement, and planning. Very poor damage limitation, complete lack of concern for the opinions, and more immediately the well being of his Democratic colleges, police and passers-by. We are left to assume that he is a fool, or either that was his plan or that was a result he was enjoying. And now at this point does he not become guilty of these things they are charging him with. It may be he didn't start the day with the intention to commit Abuse of power Obstruction of Congress. I have to ask how many times could he have prevented it, stopped it, in the course of the afternoon or distanced himself from it to a huge degree. Isnt that the prerogative of the President. The buck stops with him.
I’m not clever enough to answer for the presidents intention, action or how the law will interpret it... I do (as an outsider) find it interesting though, but I worry for how long this bipartisan escalation of fear, resentment and hatred will continue without a true societal fracturing in America. This nation of millions of people is not one half good and one half stupid... or one half right and one half wrong... but their respective parties keep getting whipped up to a fever pitch against their opposition... Ahh well, we can’t all be perfect I suppose... I’m off to go and shit some rose petals!
Yep. At work I encounter a significant minority of leftist woke people of varying genders, sexuality, religions etc. I don’t have a problem with them until they start virtue signalling about how tolerant they are, while seeing how they speak about anyone who questions their narratives which proves they are anything BUT what they claim to be. Usually it is the ones that shout loudly about how inclusive they are that see straight white males as the enemy, because they see themselves as victims. I just see people, not colour sexuality or religion. That does not mean to say that most of the people I meet at work aren’t wonderful, caring, loving people.... as you say it is the extremists that cause the problems. A lesbian friend of mine (I only mention that because it is relevant to the anecdote) put down another flag waving lesbian who was bitterly complaining about how she wasn’t treated the same as everyone else - while wearing rainbow flag clothes, carrying a rainbow flag, and ramming her sexual preferences in everyone’s faces almost as a challenge. My friend just pointed out to her that perhaps if she just got on with it and didn’t turn it into a ‘thing’ perhaps people wouldn’t treat it as a ‘thing’ because really most people don’t care unless it is turned into an issue. My work area is considered a safe space for everyone, and I have stepped in more than once to protect someone I know has verbally abused me behind my back after someone from outside started abusing her and calling her a freak etc. I do rather hope I have shown her the way forward and that not all men are to be hated - but even if she hasn’t learned yet I would happily step forward on her behalf again.
In what environment do you work mate? I have been retired for a number of years, but can honestly say I never had anything like the experience you mention in 40 years of working.
@GaleForceEight big majority of the gay people are not requesting any attention. They just want to live peacefully, not being bullied or discriminated for work, or to rent a flat. Some of my close family are in that case, one has a work environment where he can says about, the other one just can't. I won't give more detail or I'll be accused of that 'virtue signaling". The situation in UK is quite good regarding freedom of being whatever you want (I just compare that with France).
