    Derailment:
One of the things that grinds my gears with Scottish ‘authorities’ is their insistence on putting a tartan label on everything with the Gaelic (pronounced ‘gallic’ in Scotland and gaylic in Ireland) language; particularly railway signs and in places where it was never spoken.

It is particularly ironic because William Wallace of Mel Gibson fame is portrayed as a wild Gael. The thing is, his name Wallays, means Welsh speaker just as Inglis (a fine Scots name) means English......

Penicuik like Pen-y-Fan in Wales, Carnforth in England, Carnwath in Scotland and Cardiff in Wales are ALL Brythonic i.e. Welsh in origin. Merlin’s Pool is half a mile from me, his reputed grave a mile and a half. The Welsh wizard in Scotland!

The history of the so-called Dark Ages (a Victorian term) is slowly being peeled back by archaeology. It is clear that waves of invaders became the new overlords but soon got assimilated in the majority population and we’re all a bunch of mongrels! We have Syrian isotopes in a Roman graveyard......

So Penicuik got its name before 800 AD and possibly much earlier. I assume Black Base (Tucson) has been called that for multiple generations by Native Americans.

Thanks, Callumity. :) I've lived in Tucson for years and didn't know this. So thank you for my "Forum Lesson of the Day". ;)
