DD - if you haven't already, check the operating modes. Some of those lamps can be activated permanently on by flicking the supply to them on/off two or three times within a certain period. Have a look at the instructions.

Today 26 October for my rant of the day, its got to be this annual f**k about (here in the UK) with the clocks for me. OK, I'm retired, so it doesn't have the effect on commuting in the dark that it might have done when I was working. but WTF! Why are we still doing this? No one I know thinks its a good idea, and all we to look forward to is it getting dark at 5 pm tonight.:worried: I've heard various excuses over many years, like the farmers in the North of Scotland have to milk their cows in the dark and kids needing to go to school in daylight etc, but really is it needed? I guess someone thinks so 'cos we are still doing it. Grrrr.

It was introduced in WWI to reduce energy demand and increase productivity. It works. The only time there is an issue is the two Sundays a year when the time is adjusted.
Go back to bed. You will have forgotten about it by tomorrow.

Before I retired my 7 days of nightshifts always fell when the clocks went back but never when they went forward so had to work the extra hour for no pay

Took Thursday off to pick up a new car , Skoda Octavia. The things like the starship enterprise, touchscreen and voice control , automatic handbrake. I didn't even get off the forecourt before the airbag warning light came on. Two hours later we left without the car because Skoda Europe had to be contacted in an attempt to rectify it.
This is on top of the warranty job required on my Royal Enfield Himalayan electrics.
Do you sometimes think it's your turn to be dumped on by the universe?

Thats why i have and am holding onto my 2001 sprint - enough technology to run well... but apart from shims and throttle body balancing I can do the work on it myself - if (gods forbid) - it all goes wahoonie shaped.......

the bikes etc that are coming out now are all needing specialist garage servicing & etc to keep them running...... how I long sometimes for the old points and tappets carburettor fed motorbikes

Vehicles today are plug and play, the computer stores info plug in and change various components to TRY and fix it, far to much money involved in stripping down these days even engines are simply just replaced, that's why when you see talent like @darkman and those old restored bikes you see a craft man at work.

In the hazy corners of my mind I seem to remember a wee bit of a furore sometime in the early to mid part of the nineties because motorcycle manufacturers had put forward the idea of engines as sealed units that could not be worked on or repaired. They claimed that it was to prevent unskilled people trying to tune engines for more power that might make them dangerous or more polluting to the environment but the public weren't fooled and it was easy to see that they were simply wanting to make bikes less economically repairable and therefore reduce their working life to increase sales of new machines. I guess that both the car and motorcycle manufacturers are now succeeding in making their product far less maintainable due to the plethora of complex electronics they have stuck onboard.

You're right Marty. Euro 4 was basically anti tamper but I just think it made it harder to fix anything.
I wish I had gone for something simple, being a spanner twirler myself, automatic just means not broken yet !

It is not only cars and bikes. Our Dyson vacuum/ hoover was playing up. It smelt like the motor was on its way, so had a look online and there were plenty of suppliers that could ship either new brushes or a complete motor. Easy I thought, take out the old one confirm the model number and order the new motor. The way it was put together just made it impossible to get to the motor, gave up after a couple of hours and bought a new one.

I think like all forums you have to draw the line on how far you go. As long as it's not to offensive or is seen as not a personal attack on someone then it's ok. Using bad language to a certain degree is fine but not if it's done just to see how far you can go or to upset someone. Forums are a place to have banter and chat to like minded people about your interests. Not as a platform to upset or attack people. If it's done in manner that can clearly be seen as joking then that's fine . But if someone feels it's not appropriate then it should be stopped or looked at for what it is . Everyone has the choice of looking at what threads they enjoy and what ones they wish to ignore.
Use the forum for what it should be used for and dont abuse it and all will enjoy .
