What's wrong with Lucas stuff? Never had any electrical problems with my 1966 BSA,still got the original zener diode set up which works perfectly. I think it just prefers our cold damp environment to your warm dry one! My MGB has SU carbs which are a masterpiece of simple efficiency! ( bit like Lucas really)
No...lucas = prince of electrical enlightenment and perfection. In reality it was actually OK,it's just that lots of people never really understood it.
I spent more time diagnosing and replacing faulty Lucas components than on any other car I've worked on. My TR6 Strombergs would never stay in sync more than a few weeks. We never got the fuel injected model available in Europe
Yes, it's strange how people have different experiences....l have had quite a few old bikes and cars with Lucas stuff and never had any real problems. Well set up strombergs should stay in sync' , If they don't its usually due to an underlying problem. The fuel injected triumph cars did have some issues as they were very early examples of the of the system, many owners actually converted them back to carburettors! My old MG still has a pair of 45 year old SU's and they are great . In my experience driving a properly set up car or bike with carbs is so much nicer than a modern fuel injected machine. Fuel injection is here to stay.......all well and good....until it goes wrong. Give me carbs any day ,they're easy to understand and fix!
With the ultimate in irony ...... the petrol injection was provided by - TAH DAH - Joseph LUCAS, Prince of Darkness!
Which just goes to show what a forward thinking and innovative company they really were, they were the true pioneers of injection in cars! Its just that Robert Bosch perfected it.
As an ex Lucas employee I can fully endorse this glowing view of Lucas They also pioneered diesel injectors in Ford Transits, Tractors, and bloody great big ships
You are indeed correct.......l think Lucas did make glow plugs for diesels! No doubt they would have been superior in every way.
NEVADA DMV TRIED TO RECALL MY "SODOFF" PLATE! Several months after getting my plate "SODOFF" I received a certified letter from Nevada DMV informing me that after review they determined my plate to be profane and offensive. I must admit I was amused at first that a foreign term that 99.99% of Americans have never heard of was flagged. From that point on, due to the Wuhan Virus, I spent the next four months in phone calls and emails demanding to challenge the recall. I eventually got a hearing by conference call between me, an administrative judge, and an older woman from DMV that had decided to flag my plate. She basically put forward citations from everything from Reddit to obscure chat rooms but nothing authoritative. My defense was from Miriam Websters dictionary, Harper Collins Dictionary, Cambridge dictionary, Dictionary.com and very supportive piece from CuriousGeorge.com - all supporting my argument. Frankly I was sure that the judge was a typical "traffic court" jaded judge and a vote against me was assured. But to my surprise I just received a letter from DMV and the judge ruled in my favor and reversed the recall... Bloody Hell!
Many years ago I lived a few doors up from a popular British TV magician, well he must have got a good paycheck one month when he turns up in a new Rolls Royce with the registration MAG1C.
I like that info but that's a totally different Curious George than I know! Love that you prevailed! And your argument was supported by numerous strong sources.
Back in the early 80's I had a V12 Jaguar with Lucas OPUS ignition and 4 Stromberg carbs. Apparently the Lucas amplifier unit was prone to failiure due to overheating as it was sat on top of the engine inbetween the V (they moved it on later models) although I had no problems with mine. The Strombergs, on the other had were a nightmare to keep in tune and eventually replaced replaced with a Lucas version of Bosch FI.
