The news of quarantine for people returning to England from Spain has thrown my September plans up in the air, dammit. Route mapping will continue but it's looking ropey for getting there this year.

I think any plans to go abroad this year will always have to be assessed with the view that rules may change at short notice and isolation measures put in place with no notice. If you can afford to take the extra time off on your return then great but it needs to be factored in to any travel decisions.

Yeah, there's always been a risk but now it's become something specific. Rachel and I are both working from home these days so we could self isolate but it'd be pretty inconvenient for getting provisions. We're thinking, probably not worth it.

I've been booking and cancelling a week in Southern Ireland since May. A 5th attempt will be made on 10th August. The Irish government want us to quarantine on arrival for 14 days, not really practical on a 7 day biking trip!

What if you ride in from Northern Ireland?

That is allowed, but somewhat cheating the system.

And possibly a little too cautious!

    Hi all,
I know that the best sat nav has got to be the one you have with you and is working, but, if you haven’t got one, (My blew away in Feb.) which one would you buy.
Don’t really like using my phone.
    Thanks, Ken.
    PS.
Been hanging on in the hopes of an Halfords Discount card, but time to pull the pin on that.

That's easy. People will tell you Garmin or Tom Tom depending on what they're used to. Go out and buy either, whatever you can afford but I personally wouldn't buy the top model.

Agree entirely with Andy Pandy. I bought a garmin 595, top model at the time. I ignored the minority reviews that said it was difficult to see in sunlight. It is. Bought an anti glare film which improves things slightly. But much preferred the earlier 550 I had.

The latest garmin xt model is getting very good reviews. Never had a tom tom so can't comment on those.

I use both and prefer the tomtom, I would go for rider 400 series rather than 500. The only way you’ll know is by using them yourself, unfortunately it can be an expensive mistake unless you find some sucker to buy your old one off you!

I've only ever had Tom Tom in the past and by now I sorta know my way round the menu, so will probably get another TT.
    Thanks for replies.

I usually manage to get to grips with Basecamp by this time of year and then never look at it again until April when I've forgotten all about it and have to start again watching Garmin Guru on Youtube!

Must say though, this year I've become a lot better at using the sat nav unit itself to plan routes rather than Basecamp.

The Garmin does not use any data, but the Smartlink app you can use with it does. The app is used for traffic alerts etc, so only uses a few kilobytes. Over a couple of weeks it would only use a few megabytes, maybe a 100 at very most.

Please be advised that your phone is also probably going to be updating other apps "in the background " also and that will eat into that data allowance. Potentially badly.
That catches people out quite a lot so best to check the settings for mobile data!
You can switch each app to off (on the crapple) and only the app you want to use can then access the data so you dont run out.
Not sure about android but i presume that you can.
