I often think that if someone stood up and said "lets save the NHS, can every one kick in 20 quid a month extra, that will only be spent on the NHS"I think everyone would do it Only instead of answers they just live on by milking emotions. If we could make one thing rock solid invulnerable and inviolet we could build on that. I recon they want those attributes for their own images.

The NHS is a pretty grotesque bureaucracy that is more concerned with its internal processes than patient outcomes. The clinical staff are too often handcuffed by ‘the system’. Look at all the well paid management executives who have demonstrably failed to protect their staff. Authority, accountability and money are seriously misaligned. Only the medics stand behind their mistakes. The NHS was never intended to do what it now does......just like the BBC. And why does the SoS think carrying in a box of PPE is a photo op for him?

True, but also, the NHS spends £1bn every 3 days. they have had months to prepare and stock up on PPE. The NHS managers also need to be held to account.

I believe the problem lies in the system at a much more basic level.

For those of us that went to the same school all the way through, can I ask.
Do you remember who the clever ones in your class were?
These clever ones, in primary 2 and 3, the top 4 or 5 in every class.
Now go forward 8 or 9 years, these clever teenagers, the kids that stayed on, the same kids, eh?
    Yes.
Although our parents tried hard for us and encouraged us to work hard when we where young enough not to be distracted and actually do what we were asked.
The fact is clever is born.
We all worked hard ,some kids were naturally gifted, and always were on top. These children were encouraged to excel, not to be better or have more just to " Be all that they can be".
    All well and good.
    A accident of birth.

So why are they segregated and lead down another path, treated as special and funnelled up through the ranks to sit on top of the milk, in a bubble, isolated ,in their own achievement cycles.
If I took another accident of birth, for instance, Colour, or Disability, and then segregated, isolated, treated then differently, this would be wrong.

These clever kids and constantly fawned over, lavished with praise, rewarded with, salaries, offices, cars, homes, and other indulgences, raised far from the rest of us, away from the madding crowd, to lead privileged lives in, sterile situations.
And so situated in leadership roles they have no direct experience of ,and their greatest drive ( not to improve the present) being their desire to climb, no longer managing their location, only their climb, to the next achievement not interested in the world they inhabit / manage, only that one, yet to be achieved.
This is the driven professional classes that has been promoted to ruling our country.
This is the reason our managers in all sectors let us down. I think.

    I respectfully disagree.

Talent/ability is where you find it. Grammar schools were a huge engine for social mobility. I had a Comprehensive educated bus driver’s son once work for me who did the whole inverted snobbery chip on shoulder thing. I explained to him the error of his ways. He was worth so much more. Last I heard he was a Major in the Army Air Corps flying Apache helicopters. We cannot waste talent.

The flip side of the coin was captured by the novelist Evelyn Waugh when someone spoke to him about ‘the cream of society’ floating to the top. “Yes,” he said, “rich and thick.”

    Sorry - @Bikerman

I just got a reply to it as a signer -
Sorry we cant accept the petition to give a tax free lump sum of 5K to all fantastic health workers.
There's already a petition about this issue, we cannot accept a new one.

Social mobility in a society were we all have enough is a splintered issue.
I dont mean people floating to the top Im more interested in those being vacuum pumped to the top.
I have no issue with self improvment in fact I concider it civilised.

but then, Capitalism gave us Formular One engineers, and they are producing life-saving equipment within days of the call going out.

The state can't even provide PPE for their own workers with months of warning.

Whilst on one level I get what your are saying James. For me it is about how do you define the levels of success. There are some in society that make a conscious decision not to learn or improve and grow their lives, and there are some that cannot. There are many that come through school and don't get a formal education that go on and make a success of their lifes. At the end of the day opportunities do exist and there will always be some that take them and others that don't. Life can never be the same for everybody, so as a society we have to provide for those that are less fortunate than the many. The challenge seems to be identifying between those who need the assistance and those that are taking advantage of the welfare process.
