Hi, so I’ve just spent over £300 on the Rugged Pannier (and fitting kit) for my Street Scrambler and it all looks very good... but when I get home and start looking more closely I see that any rain will just go straight into the pannier as the flap doesn’t cover the top, and the soft fabric leaves big gaps for rain to get in and soak anything in the pannier as there is no fastener across the top... any thoughts from anyone who’s got the pannier as to keeping the wet out?... I can’t see a rain cover for it on the accessories ... only one for the waxed pannier.. and it would seem ridiculous to have to wrap everything in a plastic bag... the pannier itself is apparently waterproof but what use is that if rain gets in at the top ... I’m a bit cross that I didn’t check it all out before paying out for it but I’m not near enough the dealership to just drop in... assumed a Rugged Pannier would be strong, robust AND designed to keep the rain out ... clearly not designed by anyone in the UK... am I missing something here ? ... thanks a bunch and hope everyone keeps healthy

So the Rugged Pannier is for the Scrambler 1200 not the Street Scrambler?

I have it on my Scrambler 1200 XC, you need to roll the top and fasten it then close the flap over the top, there are gaps at the side however, the bag is waterproof so you should be good. Also you can lock it to the Scrambler 1200 frame which is handy

Thanks for advice ...It’s on the accessories list for the Street Scrambler so one can only assume its the same pannier as for the 1200 Scrambler even if it’s a different mount frame. .. so same issue of no protection against rain without doing something makeshift like having to roll the top ...although doesn’t appear to be any way of fastening it . bit of a let down as I’ve actually replaced a wax pannier for this as it’s got nearly twice the capacity... anyone know if there is an outer waterproof cover for it ? Cheers

put some pics up of your rugged panniers so we can see if there the same as the 1200 ones that are a roll top.

Perhaps not expected to be used in the rain......another trendy accessory for posing in the city.

Can you return it and get something fit for purpose

I can see what you mean....but I assume this not the one you have as this has a foldup inner bag as repooh mentioned above

Thanks for all helpful replies.... the photos show the pannier and how rain will get in, but since posting I did find the YouTube review as JerryBB suggested showing how you roll the top and clip the ends together to keep it fairly tight. So I think it's the same pannier as on the Scrambler 1200 as it’s exactly as seen in the Farmers video. Would have helped if the Dealership had shown that to me at the time... the other question is about the ability to lock the pannier on...I’ve read that there is something on the inside of the pannier behind the catch mechanism so can anyone tell me about that too ? ... much obliged for your time and help on this

Behind the lining there is a knob top right

it acts like a pill bottle lid, if you twist it whilst pulling out it will engage a locking mechanism to stop the release catch from working. Dont be over zealous with the twisting or your break then knob

Ah thanks for the info...much appreciated... I’d figured that it was something to do with that knob but didn’t know whether to pull, push, twist or turn it ... as with my other question about keeping the rain out of the bag it’s really something the dealership could have told me about when handing the bike over. .. thanks again

I don't, the only thing I got when I questioned my dealer who like yours did not bother to inform me of this feature was:-

1 – push in the knob before turning right (like a secure bottle cap on a medicine bottle)

2 – carry out the opposite action – push back in again and then turn the opposite way to unlock it.

Hmm ...yes the locking knob on the inside of the pannier on mine doesn’t work either and don’t want to try and force anything ... tried teasing it and pushing turning whilst gently shifting the pannier around in case it’s slightly out of alignment... I’ll message the dealership who, although of course not open, are replying to e mails so see if they can either offer words of wisdom or prob will say they’ll look at it when in for service .... due in June?.. if things vaguely back to normal by then ...no breath being held here ! :dizzy:

Find the velcro in the lining, pull it apart, find another velcro inside and under that is the knob! Works great!!

Very many thanks for posting this info .... really helpful on clearly showing how the locking mechanism works. .. just followed the instructions and found that mine works perfectly. ... bit of a hidden secret this....not foolproof re security but better than a casual tealeaf just being able to lift off the pannier and stroll away ... thanks again
