    Bike - 2011 Speed Triple

Rode bike approx 15 mins at dual carriageway speed, sat at set of red light and lost all power, no spluttering just went dead like a flat battery. Pushed to side of road, turned the ignition and no lights/lcd turned on. Pressed the cut off switch off and on, took key out and put back in still nothing, kept trying and after approx 5 mins turned on, sounded a bit of a struggle (like an old carbed bike needing some choke) but started and ran fine for the next 20 mins.

Left work, got on bike, wouldn't start. Lcd lit up but no noise from starter motor. Tried the things from above, still nothing. Sat on the bike and lifted side stand, lcd came on with the next key turn and sorted. Rode to end of road, engine splutters, cuts out. Do the same as before and after couple mins powers up, ride home with no further issues.

The only 'work' I've done to the bike since the last ride was add a optimiser quick plug in cable.

Any suggestions to what could be the problem?

If you have a multimeter can you check the voltage in your battery to check its health?
    - Engine off - 12.8v
    - Ignition on (electrics) but not engine - 12.6v
    - Engine on idle - 13.2v
    - Engine above 3,000 rpm - 13.8v to 14v
Check the wiring of your optimiser, is something grounding?
Are all the warning lights coming on when you turn the key, if one is not are you missing a warning light?
Check you earth cables, make sure they are secure
Check your battery terminals are clean and the main loom contacts have direct contact with the battery terminals and done up tight - no accessory connection between them

Just a shot in the dark but something 'similar' happened to me on a past Japanese bike. It ended up being a bad voltage regulator. VR's don't last forever. Suggest checking that.

I suspect a poor battery connection. It is obviously passing SOME current. It takes a pretty good connection to run a starter motor and still run everything else. I would suggest rechecking your work where you installed the battery maintainer. ...J.D.

Yep, had a look a yesterday and the positive connection was loose, probably a mixture of hitting a few bumps and me in a rush. Put the battery on charge and the optimiser lit green for 12.7v (or similar) and I left it on charge for a few hours, will give it a test run tomorrow if the rain stays away.

I'm going to be picking up a multimeter and will be doing those checks, my knowledge of bike electrics is very limited and I didn't know the voltage changed with higher revs etc, thanks for the info
