Good evening everyone I have a 2018 street twin which has developed a starting issue. I can through the start up process and nine times out of ten it will start first time. But every now and then I try to start the bike goes through the process and nothing not a click or flickered a couple of times then will get a click or two then it normally starts. But tonight went through the process nothing tried again nothing switch off try again then clicks but every time I try and start it I press the starter and every time I press the starter it goes through the process again with the fuel pump making a noise the Speedo doing its thing but won’t start after about five attempts it finally started. I’m thinking the battery is on its way out .or a loose connection somewhere? Many thanks for any help.

Certainly check connections at the battery for tightness. Is it used routinely or has it sat a bit? I would have it on a battery tender. It will pay for itself in extended battery life, never mind sure starting.

Many thanks for the quick reply. The bike is used every day but will check the connections.

That behaviour sounds like a dead cell in your battery. I've had that happen more than once in my cars. Starts fine most times, then click, nothing, then it will be fine a few times, then click again. New battery solved the problem. Have your battery load tested.

So managed to get the bike into my local triumph dealer at short notice. They thought it was the battery to but turns out could be a starter issue. Called me today could also be due to a lot of corrosion with the electrical connections. What they call a lot of corrosion I don’t know ? But it is concerning on a bike that’s only a year and a bit old that’s always cleaned and dried and covered in acf50.

Another update there now keeping hold of my bike as they think there could be a problem with the clutch basket. And as it’s still under warranty they want to keep hold of it and investigate further. With this and the attitude I got from the sales team on Saturday now really put off buying another triumph do they not make bikes to ride all year around and not be a garage ornament?

Agree that the corrosion issue is a bit concerning on a newish bike but could possibly be something simple like salt etc gradually working its way in with you riding pretty much every day right through the winter months which to be fair could happen with any manufacturer, thinking though that it is surely a good thing that Triumph want to hold on to your bike to check a potential problem with your clutch whilst the bike is still under warranty! that could possibly save you any future worries and/or expense in that area!

Sounds like the usual can-bus failure.

Very true in what you are saying about the corrosion but have never suffered with any other bike before just a bit annoyed I didn’t see it . Plus I agree about them keeping the bike which down the line could possibly cost a lot of money so am glad there switched on there.
