It’s a minefield. Language changes naturally but it is strange that the p and n words can be used as self descriptive but not by people of other races. I also struggle to keep up with ‘approved terminology’. My kids tore me off a strip for using a word that promptly came right back into fashion!

As for tolerance and apathy I have long been of the view some things are intolerable and you get what you tolerate or encourage. We have some perverse incentives......things we encourage unintentionally.

 

I really don't want to come onto a forum such as this the get embroiled in arguments, but I disagree with DD's statement comparing abbreviating terms, I don't believe that people attach offence to being called a Brit or a Scot, however Paki has been used as a derogatory term against not just Pakistani people but to wider Asian community for years.
This doesn't make me a snowflake, a term in-itself used by some as a blanket to label anyone with an opposing view, it just means I don't agree with the statement, but I have done this in public, not by reporting to admin!
That said, I still like DD and consider him a mate, doesn't mean I have to agree with everything he says or does, he is a master piss taker & wind up merchant, I know at times he posts stuff that is looking for a reaction, I think the ban was over the top, but I return to my original statement, I don't come on the Forum to argue.

I really hope that this doesn't just spiral into something that destroys a place I love & enjoy, may peace & humour return to the Forum soon.

 

I'm old school and tend to call a spade a spade (cards that is) the whole snowflakery thing just pisses me off (or is that not allowed now)
anyway as a mod on another forum i can understand that there is now pressure to say and do the right thing when it comes to editing a forum as the owners are in fear of law suites etc even if that is totally OTT snowflakery however its equally very very frustrating for people to try and say something that is important to them without the risk of being banned (no wonder there is a mass exodus to social murder)
The fact that its affected this forum is unfortunately a sign of the times and it would be very sad if this went down the route of others that i use where politics and religion are banned subjects along with plain banter good humor and friendliness....ramble on guys

That's the trouble nowadays... I heard a report yesterday that as a whole we now speak to people digitally more than we do physically. Okay... But if person A posts/types a comment that goes over person B's head, or is misconstrued, that's where trouble starts. Very difficult to know if you can't see person A.

Now, me... I don't care what anybody else says, I keep my feelings to myself. I don't care what race, colour or creed you are, if I like you, we'll get on, if I don't, we won't. In fact to me your very existence ceases. I won't force my opinions on anybody, we are all entitled to them (though 90% of others opines are ridiculous, of course ).

And there you have it. For what it's worth, ain't nobody on this forum pyssed me off yet. Not that that's an excuse to try. I have a Mk2 Tiger, remember.

 

Oh, yeah. Like and dislike buttons. I often forget to use them... Tend to just reply instead.

I was reacting to your post in this thread where you made the justification for shortening Pakistani in the same way as Brit or Scot, I think the former abbreviated would be likely to cause offence, where Brit or Scot wouldn't, sorry if I didn't make myself clear.

I do know you mate, I know you aren't a racist, what you are is a p1$$ taking pot stirrer who likes to push boundaries from time to time, in the full knowledge it might get a reaction, well, aided & abetted by others you certainly got a reaction!

To clarify, my original post was part in genuine support of Hindus and Sikhs, and also in part to call out the hypocrisy of the likes of the BBC who refer to the culprits as "Asian" which I suspect is exteremely offensive to the vast majority of Asian cultures and religions who have nothing to do with, and infact have been victims themselves, of the evil bastards that have committed these crimes.

The BBC and many others are constantly calling people "racist", "bigoted", etc simply because they have a different opinion to their politically driven agenda, but then they repeatedly and deliberately refuse to accurately identify those that have committed these crimes and instead label them as "Asian"... how racist, offensive and insulting is that to all those innocent cultures that orginate from the Asian continent??

And regarding the use of language; at the seemingly accelerating rate with which the feeble minded PC brigade are removing words from our language, just because they (the minority) suddenly decide that a particular word (or shortened version of) is now offensive, we will have no language left. And in my view it just demonstrates what goes through these peoples heads when they concoct some ridiculous reason why a word or phase is now considered offensive, to me they are just projecting their own sick and warped personalities.

Thanks mate. It beats me, and I'm still confused. But then I'm increasing confused with each passing day... I genuinely only discovered today that "tottie" is now considered insulting, who the hell would be offended by being considered attractive? - Must have been some fat, smelly, red dyed hair, Corbyn supporting virgin that came up with that one. (Noone will be offended by that will they)

Amazing what some find offensive. I told a lassie once that she looked really pretty in her bridesmaid outfit. It was in a non salacious manner, yet she told me to walk away in a jerky manner. Gave me advice on sex and travel, she did. In all honesty she looked the best of the bunch, yet she was offended. Lesson learned. Ain't nobody gets a compliment from me any more, specially them funny blokes with lumpy jumpers. It's not worth the aggro.

Honesty being the best policy, is it better to just say "you're ugly, you smell" , or suchlike?

 

Oh the stress I used to go through when meeting up with female colleagues for a social night out... do I just say "Hi", shake hands, hug, kiss on the cheek, all of the previous.
