That's good to see the scumbag getting caught, but what if he had a knife or maybe even a screwdriver used to break a lock. The police wear stab vests for a reason. I wouldn't be chasing after him, if anyone wanted my bike I'd be handing over the keys and then getting the police involved

 

Appreciate your feelings and point of view about knives etc. but the reason so many get away with it is because joe public just stand there and do nothing most of the time. The police are too stretched to deal with every incident.

I recently got badly beaten because I tried to stop another guy getting beaten up but I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

 

It is a tricky one, I understand. If they were running towards me then a push or stick my leg out is the most I would do, I wouldn't be following in and chasing them.

 

I had my bike stolen and wish someone would have done something.
If I were in that position I would have helped as I hate this kind of thing.

That’s why in the event I am placed in a position of potential bodily harm I am prepared to let my good ol fashioned 1911 do the talking.

 

Us Brits aren't allowed to have guns, although the criminals seem to have them in abundance. Don't let the liberal retards take away your rights to own guns. You'll end up like us.

All I can say one less till some prat sitting in the dock gives them a reward and a pat on the back and possible holiday as they come from a deprived background or area. The other thing I say is they come for my bike they best be armed as I would not be handing over my keys I'd rather be dead. I worked for my belongings and they are mine and I will fight for that or serve time for defending whit is mine.

Ooh, that's a little contentious. The US is probably never going to solve it's gun problem now, whatever they do, but fortunately we're still a long way behind them in terms of gun violence. And that's largely down to us NOT having the right to own a gun. We have a gun problem in this country but it's tiny compared to theirs. Don't know what you mean when you say "You'll end up like us"? I think "us" are in a far better position than they are.

 

Restores my faith in Britain, all we need do now is get the government to issue real deterrent sentencing and we stand a chance

from what I can discern, USA in 2016 was about 45,000 bike thefts while the UK was about 10,000. However, the population of the USA is about 325 million, while the UK is about 60 million. Not much in it percent wise, but maybe having a firearm IS a deterrent to some scrote nicking your pride and joy?

 

Bike theft is a big problem in this country..at least it is to us bike-owners. Most of the population don't own bikes or give much thought to bikers (except when we 'annoy' them on the road). We are a small minority and therefore our problems are by-and-large ignored. There are ways to reduce theft if governments and councils choose to spend the money (I'm talking about bike-specific secure parking for example). I think standing guard over your bike with a gun is probably not the answer and is likely to encourage bike-stealing scumbags to bring their own gun next time.
Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with bike thieves being severely and seriously damaged if they get caught. I have been a victim of bike theft and wanted the culprit to suffer intense pain. The current laws, especially where youths are involved, are feeble but involving guns as part of the answer is plain daft.
Anyone reading this who is seriously concerned about the lack of action taken by successive governments to fight bike theft should see what MAG are doing (which is a lot) and then join up.

 

Don’t want to derail the thread, but just want to say that as former law enforcement and a legally carrying citizen the point of protecting yourself with a firearm is to NOT let them know you have it. If you have the forethought and time to brandish it, you had time to get away. If you carry on your hip like a cowboy you just mark yourself as first target. One more comment, I do love my 1911. From a standing position I can hit a 100 meter silhouette. It hits hard, no little 9mm pew, pew!

It's a lump of metal with two rubbers circles attached, I've got no emotional attachment to it, I do on the other hand have an emotional attachment to family and friends. I have insurance on the bike which covers theft. I'm not get stabbed or acid sprayed in my eyes for a bike.

Chances of it ever happening in the Highlands of Scotland is pretty slim but if someone wants to do the job of the police or take the law into their own hands then good on them, just not me.

 

Interesting point "to NOT let them know you have it". You are obviously far more experienced in this world than I am, but if I was going to steal something, and thought there was even a vague chance that I was going to be confronted by someone carrying a gun (and isn't there a pretty good chance of that in the US?), then surely I would be daft not to take one with me. It doesn't take long before just about everyone is bringing guns to the party.
In response to what others have said about how they would or would not defend their property (bike or whatever), I don't think any of us really know what we would do until it happens. The most timid people have been heroes.

 

Not letting someone know you have a gun stems from the legalities of defending yourself with one. If you pull a gun on someone and don’t use it, you stand a good chance of being in trouble for brandishing a firearm. The courts would see that as an indicator that either you or the perp had time to get away from the incident and the use of a gun was unnecessary. Same as if you shot at someone who was already trying to flee, you are no longer in danger at that point so you become the aggressor. Lots of issues such as this are well covered in the classes required to get a carry permit.
