After my recent "Tour de Yorkshire" I was going to suggest North Yorkshire as an idea, but also happy with Andy's suggestion of the Dales. Seems to be quite a few bunk houses in that area online, and the roads are supurb and quiet. Obviously some research would have to be done, but might be worth it before jumping into booking Llanidloes again.
Hi all last year I committed to the GMU without thinking, do that a lot and forgot my youngest boys birthday so next year I can’t do the same weekend The following one 23/27 is good for me, hopefully this will be ok
Get on with it then Or any of the other many work shy folk that populate this forum I would also like North yorks way, plenty of good roads around there.
The Yorkshire Bunkhouse may be a possibility in Rosedale Abbey - right in the middle of the North York Moors. Does anybody local on the forum know the area? It's in the centre of a small village with a shop and there is B&B accommodation in the White Horse Farm Hotel nearby.
Just rejected the Nidderdale Bunkhouse - too remote, nothing near it including any B&B accommodation. Also Skirfare Barn - masquerades as a bunk house but is really a Hotel! Too expensive and also remote. Also off the list is Hornby Laithe Bunkhouse Barn - too remote and too big (sleeps 50).
Here's a few more off the list! Dalehead Bunkhouse - too small and remote. Thorpe farm Bunkhouses - too remote. Grassington Bunk Barn - looked promising, right size, close to Grassington with hotel and B&B accommodation, then I saw the "Please Note - we do not accept stag or hen parties or anything of that nature" Well, that's us out then! Barden Bunk Barn - no B&B, too remote. Holton Gill - too remote. Bank House Farm - too small and remote. Hawdraw Old School - currently up for sale! (also a bit remote). So, unless Andy's suggestion has mileage - Llanidloes here we come!
Pity the accommadation does not fit our needs. I've just completed a mini tour in Yorkshire and the roads are brilliant.
Is there anybody out there ? Willing to ride up to Kirkby Stephen with me or meet up there and check the place/area out ?
Hi Andy I have spoken to the wife and cleared the day tomorrow, so we are good to go... As agreed give me a call later..
So me and Steve @Wessa set off early today (it was still dark when I got up ! ) and had a ride up to Kirkby Stephen to check out the town and the bunkhouse. The town is ideal. There's loads of cafe's, pubs, pubs that do food, pubs that have rooms, pubs that have rooms and food, fish and chip shops, curry house, B&B's, guest house etc. The roads of course are fantastic. Anyone who has ridden the Yorkshire Dales and The North Yorkshire Moors doesn't need me to tell them. Sadly the bunkhouse is shite. I wouldn't sleep there and I wouldn't use the showers and I've slept in a few dodgy places. I really can't recommend it to the members of this forum. There a loads of really good bunkhouses in the Dales but the one's I know of are too remote.
Thanks guys, much appreciated. (that's one each) We need to keep looking, there must be more than just Bellyjam and llandiddlytoes that fit our needs. If we can find at least one more, we can always just rotate the three !!!
Thanks Andy. That's a shame as otherwise it sounds ideal. I know how good the roads are in the Dales and the moors - so quiet compared to down here. All of the bunk houses I looked at were just too remote.
I'm going to have a look at Wiltshire. There must be a possibility of at least one suitable bunkhouse and its probably the county with the quietest roads around here! Also, all fixed speed cameras in Wiltshire were switched off a few years ago to save money!
Yep a great ride out (253 miles) for me, only spoiled by the bunkhouse which I agree with Andy was in poor nick and the fact that the gear linkage on my speed twin sheared off. After covering about 10 miles in first gear found a garage and a very helpful mechanic who was also a biker.. He removed the linkage and there was just enough thread to reverse the link and get enough movement to get me home. Great guy and did not what anything for his trouble. I gave him £10 for a couple of pints. Here is a picture of his garage and the temporary repair.
I thought that was the bunkhouse at first! That's not good mate - have you got a very heavy left foot? Top marks to the mechanic though
Yep top man, did not get his name though, which was silly really. No don’t think I have a heavy left foot. Never had a problem with any of my previous bikes? Dealer rang this morning and has raised a warranty claim with Triumph. Hopefully can get it booked in when I get back from holiday. Update. Just remembered I took a photo of his garage, his name and telephone number is on a sign on the front. It is Graham, so gave him a ring to say another big thank you. He was delighted the fix got me home...
