My Dad had loads of Vauxhalls including a Cresta and I vaguely remember one called a Wyvern ?? And another called a 101 deluxe ?? EDIT Wyvern 101 Deluxe
As Vauxhall was owned by GM, most Vauxhalls bore strong elements of the styling of their US based (GM) progenitors - Chevy in particular - but usually 5 to 10 years later! Compare the Wyvern to this 1940s Chevy and the Victor 101 to this 1950's Chevy The globalisation of car making isn't a new phenomenon!
I had the rare experience of being "upgraded" with my entitlements DD. Back in the day you had to renew your HGV licence every 3 years. On one occasion mine came back showing me as qualified class 1 (artics). I had only ever taken and passed a class 3 ( rigids + trailers ). Being an honest sort, not, I said nowt. Waited 3 years til my next renewal to see if they ballsed up again. They did, it came back as a class 1 again, as it did forever more until I retired and let it lapse.
Hey DD - that was an image found online. Actually, at the time I sold mine I think it was every bit as smart as that - but a little less garish as the wheels were silver ....... though still 6.5Js! They were great looking cars as long as the tin worm could be avoided, but a bit breathless as a 1500 GT.
Me too. Just turned up, they check my licence, gave me a delivery list and off i went. They asked if I had driven one before, and I said yes ( needed the money desperately). So off I went. I had to put paper discs in the tacho, no idea what I was doing, all wrong. Went back to the agency and admitted it, the fella just told me ' you can now & a here's a 30 second lesson on tacho's' . Never did get those bloody things right, but drove around on 7.5t for months
Bet you were relieved to return to somewhere sane and normal? I knew Bootle fairly well as I worked and lived in Crosby before exiling myself to the West Country in 1976. It was harder to do than might at first be imagined as I was born in Liverpool - though raised in St. Helens - and I'd always enjoyed visiting and then living there. But the decline and fall of the docks and the generally poor state of the city socially, culturally and politically made the future look far brighter in the remoter rural havens of Devon!
No mate. Like you, I thought if things ever went pear shaped I could be in real trouble. I shunted one or two about when it suited doing my proper job. It saved a bit of time when waiting for plod to arrange for a class 1 driver to attend some RTC's ( formerly road traffic accidents ). Never drove any class 1's for a monetary gain.
There won’t be many on here that know what a Slickshift ‘box is Ade. There was one fitted to a 650 Triton that I owned way back in 1967.
I wish I'd kept my old Ex army 1976 Land Rover air portable, or Lightweight as some people called them. it was a complete bastid to drive, heating was non existent, wipers were absolute crap,no power steering, gearbox was a double clutch fecking nightmare till I changed it, and changing the gearbox was another nightmare, but it would go anywhere you pointed it and it will still be going today, after 20 years since I sold it, I bought a Range Rover after that and forever wished for the Landy back.
I sold it to Shotton Airfield in Peterlee Jez, It's a parachute training centre and they were going to use it as a bird scarer with a loud speaker on the roof to clear the runway when the plane took off, they are pretty rare so I hope it's still there, and it was definitely a 1976 Reg, I bought it in the auctions at Catterick Garrison in 1986
Yeah, still on my licence. Tacho easier now, wee magnetic strip on plastic now, I believe. I'd still probably fuck it up !!!
I had a mk2 1600 sport in the same colour with a black roof, cracking car. How about this baby I was looking at earlier this week?
If I would of had to take the driving test at 14, this would have been the car, 400 cu.in. high output
It's set me thinking about going back there to see if It's still there, It's only five miles away, personally I'd buy it back in an instant, but my efforts of persuasion will be utterly useless, so I won't even bother.
I wish they'd pinch the fecking aeroplane ,every Sunday morning it just goes round and round gaining height, then the idiots jump out and the plane lands and loads up and takes off again, four people have been killed from there in the last few years, people round here are fed up with it.https://www.theguardian.com/travel/...fter-accident-on-county-durham-housing-estate
I had both of these cars , my 57 Cresta was a £20 trade in where I worked, it took us on honeymoon from Norwich to London to the Earls Court custom car show then up to Harrogate for a week to see Yorkshire . I also had a101 deluxe for 10 years, EGV258D, until we took up motor homes and the Victor wasn’t getting used. It recently was sold on a well known auction site for over £5 grand.
My wife's first car after we first hooked up was a yellow MK1 Escort, written off by a fecking motorcyclist the day she found she was pregnant with our first. Ripped off the complete drivers side, font panel, door, and rear panel.. She got a MK2 next in that awful beige colour.
