Has anybody successfully installed the light switch part off an older model (pre lights on all the time) into a newer switch cluster where the opening is still there but blanked off.

I was thinking of using it to switch auxiliary lights.

That’s a bit of an extreme ask Dave, doubt if anyone has done that. Are you fitting daytime running lights? If so, why not wire them into the sidelight circuit with an inline fuse, that way they will come on with the ignition.

Yes bit of an ask , I have an 08 Tiger and so would like some auxiliary led lights to help with the poor beam pattern. I intend linking them to the main beam, but would like a switch. I have heard of someone replacing the whole light switch cluster. I have bought an old cluster, but looks old, so dont want to do that, hence my question. I would rather not use aftermarket switches if possible.

Before I risk looking at my light switch cluster just wondered if others had a go.

Didn't @Col_C switch his DRL's separately? Might be able to help?

It's much easier just to swap the whole switch assembly of course. .
In the UK* there are still lots of these available on EBay on ~ pre-02 bikes
I understand that some of these might look a bit weathered - shop around, there are still some good ones - you can also try refinishing the shell. There are some products that will breathe new life into tired faded plastic.
You might also find the entire 'guts' and harness will fit inside your late model shell but you should find just the switch (from a S3/Daytona) will fit inside your left switch when you remove the rubber blank.

I just looked at the schematic and some parts on Ebay - On the 955 Tigers, the lighting switch was incorporated into the RIGHT cluster - the 1050 Tiger follows the same convention as the early Speed Triple/Daytona with the switch (or associated blank) on the LEFT switch assembly.
So your choices would be to incorporate the early Speed Triple/Daytona LEFT switch or use the Early Tiger RIGHT switch (the parts on the early TIger Switch are not conducive with the Late model right cluster though - would be a complete switch swap)
Here's a decent looking early Tiger Switch I found when researching.

*In US, they were all lights on constantly, no switch, so must be from a UK model (but most members here are in the UK)

Yes I bought an early Daytona left switch cluster. I'm not keen on using such an old, well used whole unit on my low mileage mint bike, hence I will have a look into whether I can use just the light switch part. I will report back

So I took apart the Daytona light cluster switch and it became obvious how it worked. To provide the different positions, ie switch off, side lights and main lights, a sprung small steel ball moved in and out of peaks and troughs that were molded into the casing of the light cluster switch.

By removing the blanking plate on my bikes switch I could feel the casing was smooth inside. Therefore, I concluded the old light switch wouldn't easily fit in my bikes light cluster switch. Shame.

Also the length of wire to the male junction on the old Daytona switch cluster is much shorter than my Tigers. Therefore, definitely not plug and play easily. Although I wasn't keen on using the whole switch cluster anyway.

So I am going to just switch my auxiliary leds from the main beam, and not have a separate switch.

    Was a good thought.

If someone wants to take up the mantle, they're welcome to the Daytona switch cluster for just the postage. I am in the UK. PM me.
