Hilltop Vs Other Dyno

Just wanted to add another tuner for you guys up in the northwest.
Junction 33 Dyno is in Galgate just outside Lancaster and Andy who runs it is a whizz with Triumphs. He’s done quite a few of the 955 and later triples with great results.
I took mine to him and he was very knowledgeable and helpful. Unfortunately mine had a head gasket issue so he couldn’t complete it but I shall be going back once I’ve fixed it.

 

I have read this thread with interest and while no techie (so correct me if I’m wrong!) it strikes me there is some rubbish being spouted about tuning.....by tuners and punters alike.

Simplistically (I did say was no techie!) a dyno or rolling road is an engine brake hooked up to a load of measuring devices. They vary a bit but the biggest variable is the human operating it.....the person who tweaks the maps that shape output.

We also tend to overstate the ‘cleverness’ of our ECUs which are a lot more dumb than our mobile phones. Most of us have ECUs that simply read values from a few sensors and interpret that data using multidimensional performance maps (just lookup tables that we call ‘maps’) and adjust the engine actuators (fuel, spark etc.,) accordingly.

The maps ARE the variable in the software - you don’t change how it reads the values you just change what it does with them ( simplistically new: multiply by 3 - not old multiply by 2 because the ‘new’ map changes a 2 into a 3)

The bottom line is that vehicles on worldwide sale have to meet a mass of emissions and noise legislation that compromise outright performance while generating numbers that look good in a brochure.

I am not sure - as has been suggested - how any changes to a memory device can be made irreversible. Surely it is a bit like the Bios on your motherboard. They are the immediate instructions when you fire the pc up. The engine maps are like a modifiable user interface with no additional software - until you get to sophisticated traction control (not just comparing wheel speeds) and a whole raft of sensors absent from most bikes. Bios can be re-instated .......

Educate me if I have this all wrong.

 

You've basically got it right Cal but the easiest explanation is optimisation for a given goal.
The manufacturer has many goals, some conflicting, customer satisfaction, emissions, noise etc. By doing a remap you are dismissing many of these restrictions; do you know anyone remapping to make it quieter at a given rpm, I don't ? but the manufacturers may have to to meet obligations.

 

I totally buy that.....

My issue is with the smoke and mirrors!

 

Just got back from a raj round the Brecon Beacons on one of my “off piste” routes. Didn’t see another vehicle for nearly an hour. Great when you can ride at your own pace.
Irrespective of who or how the bike gets remapped I can report my bike rides like a magic carpet so I’m not dicking with it anymore for the foreseeable future.
(Nice to know I could dick with it any time via tune ecu though, should I wish to).

I have used Jct33 on a Daytona 955 and 1050SP3 both with very good results. Andy knows what he is doing with TunEcu.

 

Afternoon all, I have read through this thread and totally agree, stick with Tuneecu, it really works, it seems that Hilltop Tuning are being exposed as lets say not really doing anything, on a facebook page by a bunch of tuners called Tree top Tuning, not to confuse with my name...

It does appear that Hilltop are potentially in a spot of bother at the moment.
I've had a few bikes done by Geoff and all but one have been significantly improved so not really sure where TreeTop are going with this.

 

Seems that they are now progressing in their investigations, and it does not look good for HT, I highly doubt so many tuners would be in on a lie, read below.
