Hmmm... so instead of taking both parts of the licence with you when you take a car or bike out for a test drive/ride you now have to go online and get a reference number and present that to the dealer who can check on your previous convictions.

Still, at least it's another bit of paper I can get rid of from my wallet.

I could never see that going from a piece of paper to a plastic card AND a piece of paper was progress.
I think I'll keep hold of mine for a while though.

Isn't all this so that they can get you to pay to get it renewed every 10 years or so?

I don't think that's been mentioned. As far as I know it has to be renewed at 70 or after a disqualification or serious illness but I can't find anything about renewing every 10 years like a passport.

Wait until you try to hire a car abroad, you have to get a code from the DVLA but it only lasts 72 hours. Still it's not like any government dept has ever had IT issues

Should make the plastic card like a debit card so it can be swiped by whomever needs info as credit/debit cards are used worldwide...we are turning into a third world country going backwards. Also everything on one card would be cheaper so combine it with the passport which I am about to renew at a cumly cost of £87. Think I will go over on a wooden Raft without one as it looks like you get a nice ride in a navy ship and free food .
