Speed Triple Rs Quirks

    Hey, Steve, I'm curious about your comment about the quick shifter "hitting neutrals then slamming into gear". Sometimes my RS shifts with the quick shifter a smooth as butter. Other times there's a very momentary hesitation then a definite slamming into gear. Is that what yours is doing? I keep wondering if it's something that I'M doing but if it is, I sure can't figure it out or replicate it. Thanks........

    And I've never had any issues with the brakes (thank goodness!) on my RS which currentlyI has about 1700 miles on it.

    Hi Sandi that’s too bad. Mine would hesitate on the up shift then rev really high, then slam into gear with a terrifying thunk. After another 500-800 km’s it started to rev up under hard acceleration when in 3rd & 4th gear. It’s almost like you are accelerating hard and then you pull in the clutch. Very unnerving. It’s now at the dealer awaiting direction from triumph. Alibi on this forum is having the identical issue as well. They pulled apart his engine and a tooth from 4th gear was sheared off. Not good. I hope that happening to you. I’ll never use the quick shifter again. Even if they do fix it and say it’s fine, it’s not worth it to me.

    Thanks for the details, Steve. From your description, what my bike is doing sounds somewhat different (and not as bad) as what yours has been doing. My RS seems to upshift reasonably seamlessly most of the time as long as I don't go from 1st to 2nd. Downshifting seems a little less smooth. Again, I've found that going from 2nd to 1st isn't a good idea. Anyway, I will have a much better idea of what to listen and feel for from your description. Hopefully it will smooth out and not be an issue. I also hope that I can continue to use the quick shifter as I've grown to like it a lot. Interestingly, though, I do have to really remember to use my clutch on my two Harleys if I've been riding my Speedy!

    Sandi, does it rev up before it goes into the next gear? If so, stop using it and go to your dealer to report the issue.

    Steve, I'm 99% sure that it does NOT rev up you as you describe. But of course now that you ask that question, that other 1% is nagging at me. I will check it right away when I ride it next (this weekend). When you say stop using "it", I'm assuming--and hoping!--that "it" means the quick shifter and not the bike. As always, thanks!

    Sorry, if you notice it Reving up, and you will because it will bounce off or near the rev limiter before it slams into the next gear, disengage the quickshifter and don’t use the quickshifter. If it’s doing this it probably has caused some damage to the gearbox and the bike needs to be taken to the dealer immediately. Sorry for not being clear.

    Thanks, Steve. I appreciate the additional info and clarification of your previous description. I'm happy to say that I have NOT noticed this but will now be on the alert for anything like this. Did your dealer have any explanation for this problem?

    You’re welcome Sandi. I’ve actually just put a phone call into them earlier and I’m waiting to hear back so should hear something today. Alibi was just notified that he will receive a replacement bike. That’s great news for us.

    Wow, a replacement bike?! That IS good news! Good for Triumph honoring their warranty--and in this case in a big way. I've had few warranty issues with the three Triumphs I've owned but I do have to say that the company has always come through and never dragged their heels. I'll be curious and eager to hear what your dealer has to say about your bike, Steve. Thanks.

    As of Friday they were informed by Triumph to pull the clutch cover and look in there. Both my dealer and I don’t think the issue resides there. They also asked my permission to drop the oil pan to investigate there as well. That might be a better place to start looking. My dealer also wanted me to send him the link to the thread Albi started regarding the quickshifter issues, as he said he wanted to send that to Triumph. I’m hoping to hear back this week from my dealer. With all the abuse my engine has taken, I really don’t want the engine anymore. I really would just prefer a replacement bike to be honest.

    You have to keep an eye on the head stem on these apparently, but shouldn't be a problem at this mileage.
    Might all be brake related, if it was mine I would strip the brakes. But yours is new, give it back to the dealer, and tell them to return it when they fix it, don't take any shit.

    Geez, Steve, what a huge headache and major drag. I was really sorry to read about all of the issues and the things your engine has been through. I can sure see why you'd want to start fresh. What a major disappointment to be so excited about a bike..then this. It would be horrible to always wonder about your engine. I sure hope that this is resolved to your complete satisfaction. Keep us posted please.
