Thruxton Standard 1200 With Fairing, Clip-on Issue.

The srandard high clip on needs to be lowered by 8mm from the standard position which Kiwidave a member on here did, message him to see what’s involved. Here’s what he did

 

Have you got a standard or the R ? The reservoir on my standard hit straight away on the high bar so I fitted the low and that only just misses

 

The master cylinder reservoir on the Standard is fixed to the brake lever assembly.wheras the R has the separate Brembo reservoir that can be moved to clear.

I must admit I find the low bars more comfortable than the high bars, only because the angle seems to suit my wrists better.

No, it hits at all angles up or down on full left lock the Kiwidave solution is the only way to use standard brake reservoir and bars.
Or replace the master cylinder and reservoir as andyc1 said

Just a point that some people may have missed - the higher bars are not just higher. They are also closer to the rider and at a different angle. If you eyeball the inner end of the bar it passes in front of the fork on the low bars, and is more aligned with the centre of the fork with the 'standard' bars.

When fitting the standard bars it is a good idea to carefully check the clutch cable/brake hose/instrument harness relationship from lock to lock. On mine the brake hose fouled the harness on full left lock, and also the clutch cable did not seem to be properly routed at the headstock. I first disconnected the clutch cable and got the brake hose in an acceptable place by tweaking the banjo, then tried different routing of the clutch cable till I was happy.

Also do not run the ignition sub harness through the plastic 'tunnel' provided with the fairing kit as it stresses the wires - I have heard of failures. I just have mine hanging from the switch to the headlight.

i installed the fairing on my thruxton (without r) with the Standard bars.
My first try (like kiwidave) was 8mm lower but that does‘t work. The brakefluid reservoir hitted the fairing when i steer left.
Now i lowered the bars 1,5 cm, now it fits perfect.
The ignition sub fits perfect in the plastic tunnel

 

Surprised you needed to go that low. Most people seem to only need 8-10mm.

The problem with the harness is not that fit does not fit in the tunnel. If you watch it as you go lock to lock there is a fairly small 'loop' of harness between switch and tunnel. This puts a lot of stress on the connections at the switch, especially on full right lock as it tries to bend the wires at the connectors.

 

I was also surprised, nut now way with 8mm or 1cm...
I have to look at the connections, but i think everything is ok.

 

I wonder how different that position is compared to the low bars, did you try the lower version as well

 

No i didn‘t try the low bars on my bike.

I test rode my Thruxton with the low bars/fairing fitted, however I had the dealer include the standard brackets in the sale. I did about 3,000km on the low bars and found them to be OK, but then swapped them over just to see how they felt as its a simple job. My initial reaction was that the standard bars were too high (!) - I have ridden sports bikes for years - but as I got used to them I do think they are a bit more comfortable. Have now put a further 4,000km on. I am 73 and six foot tall.

 

My bike from another angle, I don’t know if it helps to see from the bar end to a fixed point maybe the tank badge to see the height difference

 

Bill have you got the levers at quite an acute angle to get the clearance?

in the past days/weeks i rode my thrux with the original bars, for me it fits really perfect. No pain in my wrist or back, but one thing makes me unhappy.
The clutch cable hits the harness (especially when i steer right) my apprehension is, that the harness takes damage...
How did you solve this problem?
