I understand that the airbox and filter element is sold as a complete unit and should be renewed at the recommended service schedule. My Haynes manual suggests that "there is nothing to be lost" by separating the two halves of the airbox and cleaning the element. Has anyone done this or could you buy another filter, possibly a K&N or similar to fit? I assume the airbox may need to be modified in some way.

Well a new airbox from W.O.T. is £62.99. I know people have split the box and fitted K & N but they are slightly bigger than the standard ones and i believe the box does not seal properly afterwards. I had my bike serviced recently and the mechanic said he sprays brake cleaner over the filter then uses the air line to blow it clean.

K&N filter in my airbox. Yes they are fractionally too big, but can be fitted well enough. Put mine in as a 'fit and forget' option as the airboxes are flimsy/brittle and are easy to damage. No subsequent problems! Squaredeals (triumphonline) and triumphparts (Sprintmanufacturing) are good sources, and at least one of them can supply new airboxes. When you try to get the filter box off, you will see the attraction of not having to keep taking it off to clean the filter!!

lol I agree totally about the airbox removal. I have big hands and couldnt get in so gave up in the end and had a mechanic do it when he was doing other work for me.

Thanks guys - appreciate the advice. Thinking of buying a K&N filter but will try and clean the old one. If it's too far gone will try and fit the K&N one - only want to do this job once!

I had the 'pleasure' of that repair last month on my 1200. I guess I should have taken the opportunity to replace the filter at the same time so it looks like I have it all to do again at the next service.

In the end I fitted the WOT airbox - pig of a job getting the carbs back on. Had to do it all again recently to replace a broken throttle cable!

Is there any way of doing away with the airbox completely and just using pod filters directly onto the carbs? This airbox malarkey sounds like a real pain.

For a triple, yes, Dynojet kits with K&N pod filters are readily available. Not so much for a Trophy 1200, where it seems most owners wouldn't do this modification so they're not listed, however a kit can be had for a Daytona 1200. Perhaps a 3+1 kit would do the job for me. I haven't properly looked into it at the moment as I'm not sure if I'll be keeping this bike beyond this summer anyway.

One issue that might arise from removing the airbox though is that the carbs would no longer be supported at the back end which will cause premature failure of the inlet rubbers. So you may want to consider fitting a bracket of some description as well.

Have heard horror stories with regard to triples and pod filters - apparently an absolute bugger to get running right.
Good point on how the carbs will be supported if airbox is removed. My Enfield had this mod (airbox removed and pod filter) - carb held on by jubilee clip to the rubber - used to blow off if it backfired when kick starting!

Hi, I had one in 1994, and yes the airbox is flimsy = some soft cheeses would carve into a stronger airbox than the triumph original !!! If you are going to pull it all apart to clean or replace filter and airbox I would recommended going one step further, you can improve throttle response by lifting the lids of the carby bodies and accessing the slides, you will find a small drilling to one side of the needle, if you drill this out with a number drill 1 or 2 Size's bigger the slides lift quicker, bigger you drill Quicker the response too big and you need bigger jet's, or you might get away with lifting the needles, I went big and second hole opposite side to originals, lifted needles 30 thou" and lifted front wheel in first 3 gears off the throttle from around 4,500 - 5,000 ish rpms, bike had 3into1's fitted, I did 160,000 plus klms on this beast in under 6yrs , she is still on the road, met the new owner at a rally in 2014 she was over the 250,000 KLM mark still original motor motor and mods.
Capt now 2008 Bonneville America lots of mods .....!
