OK fellas been out a few times on the TT and noticed the coolant was below minimum on the expansion tank so from cold topped it up to between min and max.went out for a run, parked up,came back to the bike to notice coolant on the floor.Been watching it for a while now and the coolant in the tank, from cold is way below minimum but when it's running rises to normal levels. The bikes running fine with no overheating and no other problems. Is this something to worry about or a quirk of this model.I,ve heard about the fuelling issues and the engine management light but not this.Any input to put my mind at rest will be greatly appreciated.
Sorry to disappoint, but as the owner of two TNT's, I think you have a problem, I keep my tanks at the max level (with the bike held upright), and between services, and coolant changes, the level has never altered, to see it on the floor under the bike, would suggest a leak, I would star. By taking the fairing panels off, and checking around the hose clips, there may even be build of crystals if it has been doing it for along time, check all the clips are tight, as. A starting point. Ok cheers Martin I,ll go and and have a look now.The only reason I didn,t check before is because I only got it of a local dealer in February and it was supposed to have been serviced and mot,d.
I wonder if there is air in the system from the last time the coolant was changed ? I would take off the side panels, find a way of having the bike standing safely upright, loosen the coolant cap and let the engine run for a few minutes to bleed. Watch the coolant through whatever clear sections you can see to check if there is any air left in the system, then reinstall the cap and with the engine still running allow it to get up to full temps. Then check the coolant level and for any leaks. Good luck Dave
I,ve just took the fairings off, checked all the hoses, all clean with no residue, topped up coolant to just below max and turned it on.No visible leaks, temp got up to 106 fan kicked in coolant in expansion tank rose way above max and then settled back down.I,m wondering if when I topped it up last time I overfilled it and not replaced expansion tank cap properly and it's just blown the coolant out but if that's the case then why would it be low when it was supposed to have been serviced?
After you stopped the engine and let it cool a bit, what happens when you start to (carefully) undo the cap?Just a bit of hissing or a great gush of coolant? If it's the former that's normal, if it's the latter the system is over pressurising and there is a fault. PS If you don't reinstall the the cap correctly OR if it is faulty, it will not allow the system to slightly pressurise (as designed) which will allow the coolant to boil at 100°C. The 1 bar pressurisation means the coolant doesn't boil until about 120°C. PPS Do you think that bike garages are always perfect?
There was just a slight hiss and release of pressure,so that hopefully is ok.Im not questioning whether the garage mechanics are perfect or not I,m just not convinced the dealer has had it done at all.Would a bike with low coolant pass an mot.
Ok thanks. The radiator cap and expansion tank cap look fine to me so I,m going to have a run out and see what happens. Thanks everyone for your input much appreciated.
