I have a 2003 RT which is doing well, but its time for a change. I love the RT and until recently would only have considered replacing it with an R1200RT. However I have been looking at the Trophy and am very tempted. I am test riding both bikes in the next week or so and would appreciate any observations members might have, particularly if you have been tempted away from the BMW.
I have read very good reports of the Trophy and I am impressed with the value for money, as well as the fact that its a home produced bike.

I had an RT before I got the Explorer which has the same engine as the Trophy. You will love the triumph engine and gearbox, you will love the flat torque and the fact that you are not going to have to change gear anywhere near as often. Triumphs are also way, way better made than Beamers.

The RT engine is dire and the gearbox straight out of a tractor, I cannot denegrate how bad I found the gearbox, in fact a mate also bought one and rang me up to ask if he had a gearbox fault as the box was notchy, clunked in first and second and that he had so many gear changes to make, he came from an FJR. No complaints about the comfort and ride except that comfort mode gave a very vague feel and a tendency to wonder.

Enjoy the new Trophy our if you decide on the RT, I hope the therapy works for you.

Thanks ColLamb, I have got used to the agricultural noises from the gearbox of the RT, but sort of hoping that it might be improved in the 1200 version? I love the look of the explorer, first came across one when touring in Scotland last year, it was being ridden by an Aussie who had hired it and loved it apart from the fact that it was a bit high for him, not a problem for me as I am tall. Having said that I want the weather protection of a touring bike, so I think the Trophy is the one for me.

You will enjoy the Trophy but not the weight until you get rolling.

I am not saying consider an Explorer, the Trophy was not on sale when I bought TEX although I am not sure if I would have chosen the Trophy over the TEX, its just too heavy (says he who used to own a Goldwing). The 1200 engine is the same size just tuned slightly differently, but any Triumph Tripple has a glorious engine they are all superb. The twins aren't bad either.

Good luck and enjoy the ride.

Thanks for the comments, I have tested the R1200RT and Triumph Trophy 1200ES and without doubt the Triumph is the one for me. Its ordered and I will collect next week. I have posted my test ride comments on my blog - see below.

Hi there Ray, I've had a number of BM's : R1100GS, R1150GS, R1100S, R1100RT x 2, and finally the R1150R. I found they were all good - apart from the RT's that I just didn't get on with - but then I was tempted away by a seductive red Ducati ST2. She was lovely and I did a lot of miles on her.

I was tempted away from BMW because I found them somewhat lacking in the soul or character department. Typically German suppose in that they were well-made, had their eccentricities but there was always something lacking. I never felt like 'tapping the tank' in admiration as I rode along. This is something I did often with the Duke and now again with the Bonny.

Good luck with your new machine,

    Dave

Im not sure what the problem is, I have tested the link to my blog and it works for me. if it doesn't work with a click, try copying and pasting www.greatukbiketrip.blogspot.co.uk/
All being well I am picking up the Trophy on Thursday, from a dealer in Nottingham, so I will have 60 miles or so on the M1 to enjoy before I get a chance to look over all the bits and pieces.
