Hello everyone I am new to the forums and have liked the new modern classics series since they have been out. I am not new to riding and currently ride a 2013 Ninja 650 but for the types of riding that I go out on the bike ends up not being comfortable after a long days ride from spending all that time at once in the saddle and I know the cheapest options available to me is the base layer of what I wear under my gear, during a long ride I get pressure points under my thighs where they rub against the seat. I really like the Street Twin's especially the look and features that the new Triumph's come with and have found a leftover '18 model that's silver, I would much rather have a newer one as they've upgraded them for this year but honestly the deal is very hard to pass over and I know if I get this one I will always kick myself for not getting a '19 one. The local dealer has one leftover for $6500 but after taxes/fees the otd price is $7478 which is at least $2k cheaper than the new models and then you also have to add the same taxes/fees onto that which turns a '19 into at least $10k or so. The '18 hasn't even been prepped yet and is still sitting inside without the battery or even oil so I cannot test ride it at the moment and I did look at them months ago and should've test ridden them then but at that time I wasn't ready to make a purchase. I've also found a 2015 BMW f800r w/ 2675 miles for $7265 but I didn't get the otd price as it was nearing closing time for the dealer. I know that these are totally different bikes which is like comparing apples and oranges together. I know with the Triumph that it will be a brand new bike and I'll get a 2 yr warranty with unlimited mileage whereas the BMW I will not receive anything of the sort included but I'm sure if I asked they would at least look it over for me to make sure there isn't anything out of the ordinary wrong with it, they took it in as a trade so I know that they've already test ridden the bike to value it. I know the BMW isn't a great deal by any means and I really need to get the otd price to know what I'm really looking at, I know the salesman and the way he talked it did seem like they could come down on the price. If I can catch a nicer day to ride I know I could go back and test ride it but it's been in the 40's as of late and now calling for rain & snow. Sorry for the long introduction but have a lot to think about.
Hi Kista, and welcome in am afraid all the advice in the world is worth nothing compared to what you really want to do. You have clearly looked at the different options and weighed up the pros and cons so it's all about what you feel is right. Personally given the choice of a new bike with style and warranty or a 4 year old bike with no idea of what it's had done or how it's been looked after with no style or warranty, I know which way I'd go
I went for a 2016 model ST in Cranberry red, in mint condition with heated grips already fitted and low mileage, being “vertically challenged “, it fits me very well, I am going to scrap the original fitment tyres this spring although they are not worn out yet, I have fitted mirror extenders so that I can actually see behind me, also a rear rack and fender extender. I have also fitted progressive front fork springs, but haven’t really tried them yet. I may be easily satisfied but the standard performance is enough for me, I would always recommend a test ride before purchase.
Thanks for the replies, the BMW does include heated grips but I don't think it has any other options like electronic suspension, it does have ABS which is standard. I am leaning more towards the Street Twin as the reasons mentioned, brand new bike with warranty, the BMW still has the original tires so in at least a year or two I would consider replacing them to be on the safe side, I did look at the date code which is the 50th week 2014 but with the Triumph being new that's something I would not have to worry about for awhile. For me to do this I would need to sell my bike outright as I can get a lot more than by trading in at the dealer, if I sell I can get $4500+ but with trade in I would be looking at $3500 at the absolute most, basically what I would like to do is sell mine and then upgrade for another $2500 or so without any financing and currently my bike is paid off and I don't have to do anything right now just looking at all of my options but I know with the deal on the Street Twin that it will not stay around too long at that price.
Welcome from sunny California. I have a 2018 Street Twin and really like it. Also in silver which I think works well with all brushed aluminum colors on the bike. Mine is shown below. Had it for a year now and 4,500 miles and it has been flawless. And also great gas mileage. Personally I don't think the 2019 upgrades are all that impressive. I find that the 2018 works well for me. The 2018 peak torque is lower down on rpm which makes it more useable. The higher HP on the 2019 is only at redline. So unless you ride it like a sport bike the extra 10 HP is never used. The 2018 has plenty of power, great torque, sounds great and at lower cost. But whatever you get you will be happy. Enjoy.
Thanks, the ST does sound a lot better than the BMW and has more character, the BMW is more or less like a swiss watch which is practically bulletproof and does everything rather well but the ST just has more class or a bit of elegance to the bike over the BMW. It did warm up to 50 degrees today so thinking of seeing if mine will start, I know it's not good to only let them run for a few min but I also need to know if the battery is good and if it will run or not but was fine last I checked.
My Ninja 650, not bad for a cold start over winter however I do need to charge the battery and fill it with fresh gas. The video is only a min. long but I did let it run a lot longer for it to get nice and hot.
Triumph really has come a long ways from where they used to be and they have a lot of the features that I do like but in reality no bike is 100% perfect. I wish that I could take the bits and pieces of what I do like and combine it all into one but specs wise on paper a cruiser is ideal for me but I like the neutral riding position of a standard bike. I like shaft drive mainly for the low maintenance vs a chain drive. I've also looked at Moto Guzzi v7 or v9 which would be nice but Moto Guzzi's are air cooled and there are not any dealers near me and I'm right in the middle between two of them that are each 2 hrs away. I got lucky with Triumph because they haven't been in the area too long, maybe 5 yrs or so now but if it weren't for them the nearest would also be 2 hrs away.
That's why it's known as B*W I too have an early Street Twin and love it. I work at a dealership so will get an opportunity to try the new one for comparison purposes. My only gripe about the early version is there are overtaking opportunities I give a miss that I wouldn't think twice about on my Tiger, or on a T120 say. But that's just a minor quibble, because the Street Twin has so many other advantages around town, and on the twisty country lanes and B roads that I enjoy.
Good morning and welcome in. You are correct, Sir< about this decision requires a lot of thought. Many years ago I bought a GS850G Suzuki brand new but 3 years old from a dealer in Memphis. Turns out to be the best bike I have ever owned, Until now that is. Nothing wrong about a good deal, Good luck with your choice and remember to always ride safe!
Welcome, bikes are a personal choice, I fell in love with mine so she had to come home with me. I don't regret it. Wish you the best on finding your two wheels
