Mine is a .308. Bigger round but slower. She’ll happily put 10 rounds into a 3” circle at 600 yards (subject to the squidgey bit behind her butt doing his thing right!). Seen here on the 900 yard point at Bisley.

That dates me..... last competed at Bisley in 1981 when the Army had its Regular Skill at Arm’s Meeting and our 308s were the SLR or machine gun pairs.

Takes me back does all this talk of rifles and shooting. My first outing on the range was with a Lee-Enfield (.303) bolt action, followed by the SLR (7.62) during my time serving. Did have a spell with the SA80 (5.56) when I was in the TA. All very different pieces and demonstrated the changing times for personal weapons for soldiers.

I have a nineteen year old daughter and it is a worry but her boyfriend seems ok and hopefully won't need burying in the future

I think I started in 1966 with an ancient falling block Greener .22LR (like a mini Martini Henry) before graduating to an SMLE. The SMLE outperformed the SLR in its acceptance trials circa 1950 on pure reliability grounds but the switch to rimless ammunition killed it off. Mind you, the longbow in skilled hands outranged and was more accurate and much faster firing than the Brown Bess musket but you could teach any fool to fire the latter (or an arquebus) in 30 mins!
    SA80 felt a bit like a toy, didn’t it?
And now I’ve gone all Fernando - been many years since I saw a rifle in my hands!

Well I think I must be different in some way. I am glad now that its a crime all this sexual induna. And yes I understand as a parent you will be worried and protective. But it should be seen that anyone can wear what they want and not be ogled and stared at or pointed at. But sadly no we can't to many creeps out there. By the way Ron I don't drink anything stronger than tea. And Dozers Dad one Handsome young Lady there. My little monster is still as mad as ever.

I want to rate some of these messages in more than one category - they're fascinating, historically, socially and culturally and are as informative as they are interesting to read! I don't have any experience - or knowledge - of firearms, but do have a (typically male?) interest.

On the other hand, I have NO (personal) experience of children, having decided from a very young age (about 15) that anybody that had such an insuperable - insufferable? - obsession with motorcycles did not have the level of maturity and responsibilty required to undertake having and rearing children. I've been told many times since that I made the right decision - not that I ever had any doubt, or regret!

Anyway, thanks for the stuff on armaments - love it.

That's different. I love to come home every night to Tracy waiting and know the first thing she will say is want a cup of tea. I have rode bikes all my life and children didn't change that. But like I said earlier each to their own and if that's what you want it is great.

Hmmm. Reminds me of the chat with my daughter.....

    “Dad?”

    “Yeah....”

“”I fancy a holiday in Egypt. What should I pack?”

“Not less than an Armoured Division.”

Yes we been together for 35 and still I leave work and can't wait to get home. Yes we have been to hell and back together but we got stronger for it. And its just the sharing I like. Tracy Had £300 pounds the other week and I wanted some bits for the bike and she just gave it to me. And of course vice versa. I don't think I have been to a bank in around 30 years I just say Tracy can you get me some money for what ever and its there. Love my Family life. We got Sons and they definitely take after their Mum. Had a Daughter with my first Wife but hardly ever see her. She's got her own Family and prefers to be away for home.
