Me & four others from Lincoln , well Saxilby actually , are planning on a quick trip to the Alps in the back end of June , for about 10 days , give or take. Plan is to go over on the chunnel , nip down to Strasburg , next day over the Rhine into the Black forest ,to a campsite , then over into Austria , round the Alps into Italy , try to find that Stelvio pass or whatever it is , then probably catch the bottom bit of Switzerland and then back into France , through that montblanc tunnel thing . Something like that anyway , then head back I guess . Originally I wanted to go to Budapest for a couple of days , but we can't all seem to quite get enough time off sodding work together at the same time unfortunately , so I think it would be a bridge too far . Anyhoo , I'm sure someone on here has already done something similar ,so if there are any good camp sites worth going to that would be useful to know & any other tips or suggestions , like a great night out for 5 middle aged blokes looking for some action lol . Also if anyone thinks this sounds like something fun then you're very welcome to ride along with us , I'm the only one on a Triumph though , everyone else is on a variety of bikes including a Ducati 900 , BMW whatever , Honda Transalp & a Yam XJ1300 .

Does sound a great trip, I can recommend Bourg St Maurice in the French Alps as a place to visit/camp every road in and out of that place is a fantastic road. I seriously would not recommend riding through the Mont Blanc tunnel; a couple of our group did it as a short cut when we did a circular ride of the mountain and said it was a nightmare. Hot as hell, boring, expensive.

Take a little more time to ride the minor roads around and the St Bernards Pass (home of the big dog:smile:) is just amazing. Hope you have a great time.

Sounds like a great trip - not going quite as far but the Bonnie is off around the Mosel and Rhine in June.

I'm also planning a trip to the Alps this summer. I have plenty of maps and books to help plan the route. Nothing finalised as yet.

Riding the Alps and particularly the Stevio Pass is just brilliant. The Stevio has 41 hairpin bends going up or down. From memory you start in Switzerland and just over the top you descend into Italy. Shops and restaurants at the top, one place run by the most gorgeous Italienne woman I have ever seen !!!

Stelvio pass does sound good , we had a chat about it the other night & we're looking at going on the 17th or 18th June , heading across on the chunnel & head back into uk on about the 1st July so its gonna be two week trip basically , and we'll give the mont blanc tunnel a miss reading the above feedback lol. So yeah, if anybody fancies joining the group you're more than welcome , we'll be doing mainly camping with a bit of b&b thrown in if we cant find a decent campsite or the weather turns against us , or someone's got a bad back . There's a definate 4 & one who is struggling to get the time off but desperately wants to come , so maybe 5

I would love to head back to the Alps this year but no more holidays left as already booked race week in the Isle of Man and 10 days touring the Scottish Highlands (hope it doesn't piss it down all week!)

We went to the Scottish highlands about 4 yrs ago - had a great first 4 days going up the east side - unfortunately as we got to the really interesting bits above Ullapool , the weather took a turn for the worse & two of us lost our tents in some horrendous rain & wind , we retreated back to Fort William & dried all our kit out in a roadside café which kindly let us unload everything & take over half the café , we regrouped & tried to avoid the weather by going to Pitlochry , but alas the weather followed us.
We beat a hasty retreat in something resembling monsoon conditions , I've never been so wet on a motorbike before or since , as we zigzagged back out of Scotland trying to evade the worst of the storms. We had to stay over in the Lake district on the way back by which time our stuff was just so wet it was unreal , but I'd definitely like to go back again to explore the bit across the top
