When Is A Bike Too Heavy?

I have used Dipetane for quite a few years now in both petrol & diesel, it used to be compulsory to use it for at least a week to get the Celica twincam through the annual emissions testing.

 

Actually I hope I don't !!!!

As a combustion engineer for a major Burner manufacturer for over 10 years

I've seen claims made for all sorts of equipment and additive benefits.

The one I quoted was from my own personal experience over an extended period of time with both my own vehicles and those of customers that I saw for myself from NCT testing figures for various vehicles that had failed on emissions and were run for periods of a week to several weeks and the results were there for anyone to see.

I too was sceptical at first but seeing results is the proof I needed.

Having been a Field Service Engineer for over 40 years, I have dealt with many customers who were promised unrealistic results by overzealous salesmen over the years, this in itself makes one sceptical of claims that seem too good to be true.

Some of the other claims are pure crap as are a lot of the claims made for other products, you pays yer money and takes your choice.

 

The good news is that if you were born before 1969 you’re automatically a member!

 

Sadly very true, the biker population average age seems to be getting older every year, the yoof don’t seem to lust after bikes anymore, that’s why the biggest growth area is retro bikes. Sad really.

Nah ............. had a couple of fiats including a 128 ( 1300cc sohc with a little twinchoke carb on the top ) went like lightning, towed a bedford CF 35cwt box van back from birmingham with one including the undelivered load

 

I had a mirofiori, only a 1300 as it was same, extremely lively when the second choke came on song

 

It was Lancia Betas that made everything else look good. A friend bought one. Beautiful looking car, but it took about 6 months to dissolve (I don't exaggerate) into a rusty mess.

 

The Alfasud likewise. Great cars but way too environmentally friendly. Returned to nature in a matter of months.

 

Had a 1600 mirafiori in my younger days it had been painted in sky blue by hand to cover the scabs, but went like stink!!

 

From what I've picked up over the years, eg from my parents; Is that when they were young, most folk had a motorbike somewhere in the family. And stories of going on days out, 4 people on a bike with sidecar.

But then the late 70's / early 80's, motorbike performance did a big jump, but brake and tyre didn't keep up. There were a lot of accidents/deaths which gave bikes a bad reputation. The negative image of bikers also started about this time.
Couple that with the increasing affordability of cars for the masses at the time, it's no wonder more people went straight to cars and bikes continued to have that negativity and dangerous reputation, even though they are as safe as ever now (it's the car drivers that are now our biggest danger!) Nothing like a bit of ignorance.

And the younger generation now are not getting into bikes from hearing those biased and outdated views. Though it should be noted that the current young generation are also turning away from car ownership as well. So a general downturn in all automotives.

 

I agree. It is a real shame that biking and bikers get a bad name. To me it is a small minority of riders that spoil it for the many. All of the bikers that I know, including many on this forum are responsible road users......

If getting a bad name is because of filtering and such like then you cannot change it!!
You only have to look at the scowling faces of folks in their cars as you get through a jam and they are stuck.
Peeps nowadays are extremely self centred (effing selfish) and don't like anybody getting something they don't.
Never mind, maybe the government will build us a separate lane
