Running hot

As long as the temp gauge isn't going to high it should be fine.

On my Street the fan hardly ever came on,with the Speed it's a lot more,especially in town.

 

Just make sure that you have no air blocks and your expansion tank is not overfilling. Might also be worth changing the coolant if you dont't know how long since it has been changed.

You can change the temperature that the the fan switches on with tunecu , might be a previous owner has done it . It is a common mod as these bikes do seem to run hot

 

Radiator cap off turn engine on until it is warm (thermostat open) and check that the coolant is moving and give the hoses a bit of a squeeze. if the coolant level goes up then its all good. if not then you may have a air lock.

Make sure you coolant is also looking ok and that there isn't too much crud floating about in it if so then drain the coolant and flush it out with a hose and replace with new coolant.

This may sound a bit weird but also check you are running the right spark plugs for the bike as the wrong ones can make the bike run a lot hotter or so I'm lead to believe.

I have a 2007 and a 2011 - both seem to run hotter than the Jap bikes I've had but doesn't seem to be a problem, so I wouldn't worry. The annoying thing for me is that the fan doesn't keep running after the ignition is turned off!

In traffic my 2013 is always on/off/on The temp gauge stays where it should so the fans are doing their job - I wouldn't worry mate :upyeah:

 

I spoke to a dealer today and mentioned the speed triple seems to run hot, and he said it is due to the longer travel of the 3 pistons creating more friction/heat than other shorter stroke 4 piston engines of the same capacity.
I was taking the Speed Triple on a test run and heat gauge ran at 3/4 on the motorway and jsut under max in heavy traffic, fan was cutting in and out at this point.

Seems to be a characteristic of the beast.

 

I have got to be honest and say that I believe that the dealer is talking a load of Bollocks.

A four Cylinder 1400 will have about the same length of stoke and a extra cylinder, If this is the dealer you are buying it off then I would ask that the valve clearances were checked as the exhaust valves do close up over time on these and I would also check that the bike has new coolant and the correct spark plugs.

If it was mid summer then fair enough as it is warm but in December!!!

Can I ask if this is a Triumph dealer as if it is they really should know better.

 

I agree with mr.h, my 2011 speedy's fan is always on/off/on in traffic, temp gauge sits about 3/4 and never over heated, even on hot summer days.

 

I rode it home the 30 odd miles on motorway, but the engine was at 6of8 bars before I even got on the motorway (5 mins drive in 3degrees C) once on the motorway, the temp stayed a steady 6of8 bars but when I slowed down for traffic and held up at lights it reached 8of8 and the fan kicked in.

Once home and cooled down, I opened the expansion cap and the level was correct and the liquid was a clear blue, (no mayonnaise in there either).
I will open the radiator filler cap tomorrow and see what the level is like and the state of the water, I may do a flush through of the coolant and replace it with new stuff, and maybe refresh the oils in the engine too.

The coolant and oil were all fresh 2,500 miles ago, but that was last June (2013). But for peace of mind I may well do it myself so I know it is done right and with the Castrol Power 1 - racing 10w-40 that I have.
With the coolant I have read a good thread in another Triumph forum on how to get rid of all air blocks and make sure the radiator is filled to the top with no air gap which helps keep it running efficiently.

I may do the chain as well, although only 2,500 miles on it, it is a nasty condition and needs a thorough clean and smothering with chain wax. This will have to wait until I get the rear paddock stand delivered.

It has had the last four services done, one each year, I also asked about the shims and the dealer said it was unlikely this was done due to the mileage, so I will likely get this checked this summer. (This was pretty much reflected in the price)
Other than that, the bike runs like a dream and I am very happy with her.
